Henry Vilas wrote:Satellite observations show sea levels rising, and climate change is accelerating it

Sea level rise is happening now, and the rate at which it is rising is increasing every year, according to a study released Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Researchers, led by University of Colorado-Boulder professor of aerospace engineering sciences Steve Nerem, used satellite data dating to 1993 to observe the levels of the world's oceans.

Yes, and roughly half of that rise comes from thermal expansion of seawater as warmth from the surface slowly makes its way deeper into the water column. (The other half is from melting ice.)

This, BTW, nicely demolishes the claims that global warming "paused" during the 00's. The oceans continued absorbing infrared radiation from the atmosphere, and continued to expand. There were minor accelerations and decelerations due to the ENSO cycle but no "pause" to be seen.

Satellite record alone:

Aside from the general upward trend, note the years when there is a faster then usual increase -- those are generally when El Nino is building up. Likewise, the occasions when it levels off or drops slightly are La Ninas.

And longer term:

Hey, Warmalistas Alarmacysts:

What have you done, what are you doing, and what will you do going forward to address the Global Warming that's here and worse than the models predicted?

And seeing that feverish hand-wringing, pearl clutching, deep furrowing of brows, "Look At Me" bumper stickers, "I'm Dialed In" lapel ribbons, and "Gosh I'm Nice'' awareness bracelets, and then the Lefty kill shot/coup de grâce: talking about it and thinking about it don't count, I'm thinking NOYHING!

Hypocrites!

Brrr!!!

The paper that Henry Vilas writes about is interesting for another reason. Satellite altimeters that measure sea level rise have provided very interesting and useful data, but they also need in-situ observations and/or models to detect potential problems with sensor calibration, degradation over time, etc.

We saw this same thing with the satellite measurements of temperatures in the lower atmosphere. In the late 1990s Roy Spencer's microwave emission data set appeared to show cooling rather than warming. This obviously contradicted both in-situ observations and models. Eventually it was discovered that Spencer's code was applying a correction factor for orbital drift backwards.

For both sea level and temperature, it really helps to have a combination of satellite remote sensing, in-situ observations, and models.

And here it is, satellite data on sea level rise...

For the first time in history, a ship has crossed the Arctic in winter without an icebreaker escort
An LNG tanker designed for icy conditions has become the first commercial ship to travel the Arctic’s northern sea route in winter.

It marks a milestone in the opening up of Russia’s northern coastline, as thawing polar ice makes industrial development and maritime trade increasingly viable.

It's a great day for business!

@Cadfael;

It's a great day for business!

Perhaps they'll be able to more efficiently deliver the 700,000,000 air conditioners set to become operable in 2030 and the 1,600,000,000 by 2050?

http://www.igsd.org/the-washington-post ... e-climate/

'Course Lefties (most, not all) despise the brown-skinned poor people in India, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brazil, et al.

When referenced Lefties are informed that these poor people (leading meager, subsistence existences) want nothing more than 10 % (if that) of what you's have: on demand energy, improved diets, basic medial care, and the ability to head to the fridge and secure some tofu, brie, chablis, & wheat grass tea while they post alarmist drivel at midwest internet forums, what do they say?

Something along the lines of:

"I/we realize the criminally insane UNIPCC wants me/us to reduce my/our lifestyles 40 % across the board, but that's just not going to happen. Me/we are the "Voices Of A Brave New World," and as such, need to be coddled, well fed & comfortable.

"If we aren't, that may well compromise my/our ability to explain to ignorant people (who clearly aren't as smart as us) what their priorities ought be, because I/we know what's best for them. And if that...um...compromises poor people's ability to escape the trap of poverty and dependence, so be it. Sacrifices NEED to be made...just not by me/us.

"Why? Because we're real real smart, if self-anointed, Lefties. And the extent of my/our efforts (such as they are) will be feverish hand-wringing, deep furrowing of brows, 'Look At Me' bumper stickers, 'I'm Dialed In' lapel ribbons, and 'Gosh I'm Nice'' awareness bracelets.

"And lest we forget, tthe Lefty kill shot/coup de grâce: talking about it and thinking about it replete with the attendant crocodile tears.''

https://www.nccivitas.org/2014/keep-poor-people-poor/

So, let the profligate, sustainable, GREEN, organic, free range, fair-trade, locally derived, humanely dispatched, Mother Gaia-friendly lifestyles continue unabated; no sweat off'n you's sacks, am I right?

Boil another kettle and keep posting; carbon-footprints are for little people!

Ah Lefty; so MUCH hypocrisy, so little time!

Brrr!!!

Sea levels to rise 3 feet worldwide by 2300 — and it's likely to get worse

Even under a best-case scenario, seas will rise about 3 feet worldwide by the year 2300, scientists announced in a study Tuesday. And ongoing delays in reducing carbon emissions will only cause the oceans to rise more.

"For millions of people around the world living in coastal areas, every centimeter can make a huge difference — to limit sea-level rise risks, immediate carbon dioxide reduction is key," said study co-author Carl-Friedrich Schleussner from Germany's Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.

Except that he's the sole scientist who believes that while the rest did a good job of casting doubt on, or disproving his findings. His calculations also showed that warming would overcome the trend he thinks he found in both cases.

Of course they did, that is what they were required to find. LOL
