Ill. governor names Burris to replace Obama
December 30, 2008

Chicago — (AP) - Gov. Rod Blagojevich has defied U.S. Senate leaders and his own state's lawmakers by appointing former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris to replace President-elect Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate.

Blagojevich announced his decision in Chicago on Tuesday with the 71-year-old Burris at his side.

The governor praised Burris' integrity and said he hopes that the allegations against him don't "taint this good and honest man."

...

He lost campaigns for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in 1994, 1998 and 2002 - the last time losing to Blagojevich. In 1995, he was badly beaten when challenging Chicago Mayor Richard Daley in the primary.

First impression "a place-keeper" or interim senator.

I gotta hand it to that lawyer Blagojevich hired. He's done an awesome job of turning this from a routine Illinois housecleaning to a real fight. And out of sheer spite, Blagojevich himself has managed to put the US senate in the messy position of having to reject a credible (thus far) black candidate for senator on the basis of who nominated him, thus making them look petty, at best. Fun, fun, fun.

Messy, morally (or at least ethically) curious, and dramatic, as politics Chicago-style tends to be.

Good and honest man? Would he know one if saw one?
