Ride the drive

Postby Stebben84 » Wed Jun 01, 2011 7:55 pm

So apparently bringing 10's of thousands of people around your business is a bad thing?

Soglin cancels year's 2nd Ride the Drive, says other changes in store for biking event

http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/ ... 002e0.html

Soglin, in an interview Wednesday, said he wanted to change the route for Sunday's event because it cut off many local businesses, especially on the State Street and the southeast side of Capitol Square, but decided to leave it because plans were too far along.

As for the second event later this year, Soglin said, "There won't be one."

Um, it cut them off to cars but not to bikes. From what I've read in the past, businesses did great during this event. He says later that next year they'll have the second one "go through neighborhoods"

FIrst off, what neighborhoods and will any businesses benefit. Second, I would be curious what neighborhoods would want this. Is it side streets or are we talking Willy street or something. I thought the whole point was to ride down a street that was crammed with traffic. There was something kind of cool about that. As an avid cyclist, I kind of find this a shitty move. I know it was inconvenient for car travelers, but think it was a great event as it was.

Maybe Soglin cancelled the drive because Lance Armstrong is no longer available/desirable. How much was he paid for his Ride the Drive, anyways?

Considering the first one had about 20,000 people and the second had about 30,000 people, I doubt Lance was a factor in this decision.

In terms of how much it costs:

This year's Ride the Drive event cost an estimated $35,000 to $40,000, but the city didn't have to pay out any cash.

Sponsors paid for the event as well as police officer overtime pay.

Wow, what an awful deal for the city. You bring thousands of people downtown to have a good time and spend money and it costs the city nothing.

This must be the "punch you in the face" Soglin we've been hearing about.

Not sure how much people really spent while down there though. For me and my friend it was a ride downtown, 2 loops and then a ride home without buying anything.

I don't know numbers, but considering Madison's central business district told businesses to make sure and be open says a lot.

Then there is this anecdote. One business owner, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was shared:

"Every Sunday on the Square should be like this," said business owner Kathie Retelle.

Retelle welcomed the additional traffic outside her French card, gift and wine bar – Savoir Faire.

"It's bringing a lot of people in for coffee and doughnuts and bloody mary's and then they check out the gift shop that we have," she said.

Retelle said the Ride The Drive event was exactly what was needed in this economy.

I'm just saying. Why cancel the second one?
