Dateline! 1993! Trek Bikes acquires Gary Fisher!

I think what you mean to say is that Trek is ending the standalone line of Gary Fisher-branded bikes. The brand has been theirs for closing in on 20 years.

I changed the headline.

What I don't understand is why Trek would market Gary Fisher 29er geometry under the Trek brand rather than the distinct Gary Fisher brand seeing as the Gary Fisher brand is a market leader in this style of geometry. Gary Fisher is to ATB as Bianchi is to road bikes. I suppose most consumers won't care either way, but Gary Fisher is such an iconic brand. Why mess with it?

Does this actually mean anything to consumers?

Branding is an odd little monkey. Take Brinks Home Security. They spin off their actual home security business, and change the name to Broadview. Why they'd do that, from a consumer standpoint, makes very little sense to me. If you think security, odds are you're thinking the Brinks name.

Now it's not clear if it's a totally different company, just a superficial name change, or something in between. It makes me less likely to choose the Broadview product because I'm not sure whether the company's coming or going.

But it appears to make sense to the execs. Go figure.

My assemblage of Taiwanese and Chinese parts will always be a Gary Fisher to me.
