Whose athletic department is it?

Postby pulseCzar » Wed Dec 19, 2007 12:49 pm

I thought someone else would have posted about the Isthmus Q&A with Jeremi Suri by now. I really enjoyed it and found Suri's concerns to be spot on. It's far past the time for Barry Alverez and his department stop being self-serving pussies and to step up for the academic side of UW. Cheers for a (hopefully) nice little eye-opener.

There have been more than a few people I work with at the UW who feel the same way but would never, ever say it in public. The Ath. Dept. folks I know and have read it could care less.

As long as any football coach is paid more than the lowest-paid faculty member, things will just not be right. So it goes.

Now, if the coach were required to have a P.h.D. and to meet tenure requirements within an established academic department, well, that might be different.

I dunno. We divested from South Africa in the 80s. Why can't we divest from the Athletic department unless if serves the public interest?
