I recall conversing with a friend of my father who surveyed people professionally and asking him about the validity of the practice. He explained that the science really worked and that even a small, properly randomized sampling, was sufficient to extrapolate valid ideas about the greater population, etc. "Oh," he went on, "except for sex surveys - they don't work because everybody lies about sex." He offered no explanation for this phenomenon other than basic human nature, but assured me that sex surveys should always be viewed with a great deal of skepticism.
