The GOP controlled Senate will probably try to delay approval of a new nominee until after the presidential election in Nov.

I respect Scalia as a person, an intellectual. Yet I have tears of joy in my eyes. I'm self-absorbedly crossing the line.

That'll be very tough to pull off politically. I'd say impossible, especially if Obama can find a sleeper.

What tactics will they use?

I know they will if they can but I was under the impression they wouldn't be able to delay it that long.

There's no procedural reason why they can't delay forever. But it will hurt Repubs in election if they stonewall.

Best of all, it focuses Dem voters on the Supreme Court. I sense Repub base was fully aroused by Supreme Court already.

Rachael Maddow suggests Jeh Johnson as possibility. He's 59, has already passed cabinet confirmation process. Tough for Repubs to object.

Zero chance with or without a sleeper.

I'm not really surprised, I guess, but boy howdy has this death brought out the worst in my Facebook feed.

You don't have to like or even respect someone to remember that any prominent person who dies surely had friends and family who loved them and will miss them. It's entirely possible to be glad for a possible shift in the SC moving forward without saying terrible things that the still-living might find hurtful in their time of mourning. Isn't it? Ick.

Just had to get that off my chest and hopefully preempt any nastiness on these threads in the future. As God just posted on FB: "Stay classy, humans."

That is horrible. No matter what you thought of him politically, you should be respectful.

I went rogue. I know it's wrong. I hope none of Scalia's family or friends reads this forum.

As I said zero chance. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell throws the gauntlet down.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) pledged to sit on his hands for the remaining 11 months of the president's term.

"The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice," the statement read. "Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new President."

McConnell's reaction makes it incredibly hard to envision Obama filling the Supreme Court vacancy created by Scalia's death. The majority leader has large control the floor of the Senate. And on this front, he is being cheered on by the conservative faction of his party.

What else is new? An obstructionist Congress whose only goal is to thwart the will of the people who elected our president twice.

Jeh Johnson is one idea. How about Loretta Lynch?

Dream on, I guess.
