And by "livestock" I'm assuming you mean Americans, correct?

Thus it has always been. There are two ways to keep the livestock on the right side of the fence; grind them under your foot till they have no idea that things could be better and no hope of finding out, or keep them too fat and stupid to realize where they really are and what they've become.

Either way the owners have the power of life or death over them. Men buy them, own them, sell them, work them, abuse and torture them and have no compunctions against killing and eating them. If the livestock resist, rebel, or grow old, they are sent to the butcher or else shot out of hand.

I think that more sinister than the license plate readers, and they are certainly sinister enough, are the Bluetooth sniffers that are springing up all over.

I was in Michigan in June and saw them all over as well as in Indiana and Illinois. I saw them in Ohio last month as well.

What about Wisconsin, are you getting them there too? Here is what they look like though there are other formats as well:

You may also see them as diamond shaped panels mounted with traffic lights:

These capture the MAC address of every bluetooth device that passes them and stores it in a database.

Thus they can tell not only that the car passed, assuming it has a Bluetooth in it. They can also tell who was in the car, by reading cellphone MAC addresses.

Christ, here I thought I could finally travel to Cleveland undetected and uncontested...

This is in England but probably coming here soon:

The (recycling-JRH) bins, which are located in the Cheapside area of central London, log the media access control (MAC) address of individual smartphones - a unique identification code carried by all devices that can connect to a network.

I think stores in the US may already be doing this to track traffic patterns in the store. I don't know if they are linking to the credit card when you check out but would be surprised if they didn't.

Bipartisan bill attempts to curtail police recording, storing of license plate data

Finally a bipartisan bill, but will it pass both houses and if so, will Walker sign it into law?

Actually they only know that your car was at that spot at that particular time. Place of origin and destination would require some other technology, plus psychic powers.

It amazes me how many people are willing to simply submit to this shit and say you just have to accept it as inevitable. I don't turn control over my privacy and life so willingly. You can demand restrictions over the use or demand removal of this sort of technology. If you don't get it, demand removal of the people who approved it's use.

If you want privacy regarding your comings and goings, you'll have to turn off your phone and, in some cases, take the battery out.

Tracking your license plate is the least of it and I believe it could be sufficiently regulated by deleting records after three or four days. License plate readers that ticket people who run red lights, for instance, sound like a positive step toward public safety.

In the same way, I have no problem with security cameras in public places, where you have no reason to expect privacy.

It's private communications and private behavior that I think need protection. The public debate needs to be about where the line between public and private should be drawn and about how long any records can be kept. This is not going to be an easy answers thing and I have many unanswered questions in my own mind about my own preferences.

I agree it makes no sense at all to just roll over and accept whatever intrusions are going on, governmental or corporate.

There are plenty of ways to defeat the technology. The point is, in a free country that values individual liberty, you shouldn't have to do that.

Just curious, do you object to the commercial use of such tools and techniques, or is it only governmental use which you find disturbing?

Given enough data points, they can form a pretty good estimation of your travel history, routes you regularly take and destinations.

Yeah, and they'll probably know D-man is packin' heat before they even get out of their cars. There's nothing like sniffin' pavement on a routine traffic stop.

This is why I ship my phone, buy a TracFone and rent a car for long trips.

I mean, not me, this guy I know...
