Is it even possible to win a significant amount (say, at least a million) from the lottery and remain completely anonymous?

It is possible to win and remain anonymous in some states, but not in Wisconsin. And then there is this poor guy who literally cashed out the day he cashed in:(

A greedy relative, a jilted lover or a jealous stranger? It's not like your average person knows where to get cyanide, let alone actually being able to obtain and deliver it.

Winning the lottery sure seems like a good way to ruin your life. It'd be interesting to know how many people, if any, are actually happier a year after winning than they were before they won.

Maybe human beings just aren't all that good at figuring out what makes them happy.

In chapter 47 of Sense and Sensibility, Elinor Dashwood very insightfully diagnoses this problem in John Willoughby. Austen is a very, very keen observer of human nature.
