Huge earthquake in Japan

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

Soon we'll all know why this terrible tragedy occurred.

Well at first I thought it would have been God's revenge for Justin Bieber, but after further consideration that can't be it because Justin Bieber must be God's revenge for something....

Is that a gun in your pocket or have you been obsessing about Justin Bieber?

If those are the choices, it's undoubtedly a gun.

That's what I thought-- except jokes usually are clever or humorous.

do u suppose that robertson's news organisation gets audiotapes or stone tablets from god shoved under the front door claiming responsibility for things just like al jazeera does from various folks?

or perhaps the robertson gang and the westboro baptist church get a telephone call with a code word to authenticate they really did like the provisional i.r.a. and hizbullah do/did? because they are concerned about being blamed for something they didn't and others try to claim credit like the 900+ calls various media outlets got after the first world trade centre bombing by practically everyone...

Looking at the destruction, I don't understand how even updated casualties estimates can possibly be close. They started out a few hundred, then a thousand or two, now ten thousand. But looking at the destruction it seems impossible that less that 100,000 people died.

How long did people have to flee inland after the quake hit and did they immediately realize that they were in danger? How long would it take to evacuate a major city like Milwaukee? Wouldn't the tsunami have engulfed people as they were trying to flee?

The Japanese have a cultural taboo against predicting death. That reticence extends to the medical community, where the terminally ill aren't told they are dying.

Yes. Some of the advancing wall of water and debris was rushing at thirty miles an hour.

The pictures with the sliding feature on the NY Times pages really show the destruction clearly. Entire seacoast towns are just plain gone. You can see how beautiful they were -- one had a wooded park in the middle and then a coast edged by trees, small houses all around. They were little rural villages, like the towns along the edge of Door County. Given what they look like in the "after" portion of the pictures, it's hard to imagine even 10% of the residents survived.

I am interested we have not heard one word about looting. Maybe that is not a custom in Japan.

One reporter stated that looting is "unheard of" in Japan.

That reporter (on CNN, quoting some anthropologist) had apparently never heard of the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923:

No one is looting because in the hardest hit areas there is nothing to loot. Also, unlike post-Katrina New Orleans, the stores in other areas that have food etc. are open and giving their stock away, rather than locking everything up and standing over them with shotguns. That may have something to do with it, too.

Apparently now they have abandoned the reactors, which are going into meltdown.
