Charlie FM

Postby Entropy's Stagger » Thu May 05, 2005 2:48 pm

Don't know if it's on the air yet today (I can't change the station here at work) but 105.1 is changing formats again. This time it's Charlie FM. Which boast a 1500 song lineup, top 40 shit from 3 decades and mixes most of the non-controversial formats.

This spawned from the original Jack FM out of Colorado, KJAC. It has been soaring in the rating in the markets it's currently in. Will it last?

Listen and see.

Or hear rather. . .

I love the fact that these mega-corporations that buy and run these stations always pride themselves in their research to theoretically know what that city wants. THis is what, the 3rd format change in 3 or 4 years??? You might want to go with another research firm next time guys.

I won't listen for the fact that they call themselvs Charlie FM. wtf is that?

I like their slogan: "We play everything."

I'll believe it when I hear them play some Jesus Lizard or Butthole Surfers.

They only have a 1500 song library, yikes, I have more than that on my ipod.

I read somewhere (a blog or something) that Charlie is meant for the person who's never stepped out of a mall CD store (ie, never been to a real CD store). I reluctantly must say I fall into that group.

This may not be my proundest moment, but I gotta say Charlie works for me. It's another choice for those that want to minimize the chatter as much as possible but don't want to pay for satellite or aren't into the ipod scene.

When I'm not on my bike, I'm sitting right here pounding away on this computer (don't watch a lot of TV) and have the radio tuned in on Charlie is cheap and easy entertainment to keep me going while tapping away on the keyboard.

Why not tune in to an internet station or podcasting, or archived shows from more interesting stations?

But, what does that have to do with Vietnam?

I gave this new format a brief listen last Sunday. There is something not quite right with playing Ace of Base and the Moody Blues back to back. That kind of mix should be reserved for the dentist chair and plenty of nitrous oxide.

Same shit, just more of it I say. I've listened and haven't heard anything I haven't heard countless times over the last 30 years. Therefore, I've heard all I care to hear of Charlie FM. And anyone who connects the name with Viet Nam and is offended by that is itching to be offended in the first place.

Oh, and the satallite feed from where ever it's originating (Portland?) sounds like shit.

They are doing this on alot of markets.
I just read an article about "BOB FM" going on the air in San Diego.

Same tired old playlists that sound like everything else across the dial.
It is funny to watch them scrambling.
I wonder how WMMM is holding up these days.
Honestly, I'm surprised their PD/MD Tuber is still employed, because their playlist is just a shitty.

WMMM is where they always were. A solid low end of the top 10 in the market. They're not going anywhere. And Charlie is a sister station so competition doesn't exist there.

Not everybody has these options. At work I can only get a couple of stations ("Smooth jazz" is one of them) and internet radio is strictly verboten.
I hate to admit it but I'd probably listen to Charlie, cause it sounds like it would be bland enough to be inoffensive. Even if they don't play anything great, at least the ratio of total shit is fairly low.
