Electra coming

Postby Shorty » Thu Dec 12, 2013 8:22 pm

I heard Electra was coming here Friday night. I thought they meant Carmen Electra. Turns out it's just Winter Storm Electra. Would prefer Carmen.

Or a comfortable flight in a Lockheed Electra.
Or a ride on a Harley-Davidson Electra.

Or the awesome 1959 Buick Electra 225, one of the longest cars GM ever built at, unsurprisingly, 225 inches.

Does this belong in the topic about Detroit going broke?

Or the asteroid 130 Elektra, which would dwarf the Buick, and be very bad for us.

No kidding.

Wikipedia claims 130 Elektra has a mass of 6.6 x 10^18 kg. If it hit, say, Lake Mendota, with a typical asteroid velocity of 20,000 m/second, the kinetic energy of the impact would be 1.3 octillion joules [kind of cool to have an excuse to use the word "octillion" here]. This is something like 18 million times larger than the kinetic energy of the dinosaur-killing asteroid impact.

The crater resulting from a 1.3 x 10^27 joule impact would have a radius of around 1200 km and would look more or less like this:

A Buick Electra colliding with the Earth would produce a somewhat smaller crater.
