World Dairy Expo: Ever been there?

Postby jjoyce » Mon Oct 08, 2012 12:46 pm

It's one of the biggest things that happens in the city each year and, in 24 years of living here, I haven't attended once.

Granted, it's a dairy industry event, but you'd think somewhere along the line I would have gotten an invitation or a press pass or something.

Has anyone here ever gone? What happens in there?

I have not. Although I did contemplate going there this year, pay the admission, and check things out. I did not, and this bothers me a bit for reasons you mentioned above.

I used to go every year with my dad when I was younger! It's pretty worth checking out; they do a great job of mixing the agribusiness stuff with the general spectator stuff (cool cheeses, worlds largest cow, etc.).

Doesn't surprise me that they haven't reached out to you Joyce - they're probably not too worried about a city weekly paper's take on it. Most of the spectators are from out of town anyways. That being said, it's one of the largest events of it's kind!

You should go.

It is amazing and wild. I have been the last two years and have seen:

The biggest manure pump in the world

A very scientific analysis of silage

A completely robotic milking system

People wiping cows butts while they are being judged. (the cows are judged, not the people)

A giant washing machine for cleaning the waste out of sand so you can reuse the sand

And that is just the beginning. It is a fascinating immersion into the world of dairy.

I like to imagine it being exactly like the Great Taste of the Midwest, but with milk.

That reads like I'm irked or surprised nobody's ever reached out. I think we actually have had opportunities to go, so I meant it more as a question directed at myself. Why haven't I ever taken the initiative of heading over?

Maybe next year. I'm all about the milk.

As in the dairy world, the early bird gets the worm. (I am going to get this printed on business cards.)

I'd like to see a dunking booth filled with 2% and lactose intolerant celebrities on the seat.

Get that made into a bumper sticker for your car and see how many times per day a woman gives you the finger.
