Jack's Shoes Going Out of Business

Postby LaughingGirl » Wed Dec 08, 2010 7:35 pm

Another old-time downtown Madison store is leaving, owners retiring. What ghastly chain or cheap clothing/jewelry store can we expect to move in? My, I've gotten cynical. Must see if there are any high-tops left, for old time's sake...

This is sad.

You're not the only one. I have no patience for the yuppification/gentrification of State St.

Jack's has promising to go out of business for at least three decades. Back when Doyle was AG he even got them to stop the false advertising.

Maybe this time it's for real.

Jack is retiring, but Jack's Shoes is not going out of business. You will still be able to go there for all your assorted Chuckery needs.

I remember being right behind Chris Farley in line one time there. Yeah, I was buying Chucks. He wasn't (brown shooz).

A podiatrist once told me that his feet hurt just looking at my Chucks.

I was wearing Chucks one day when a guy walked up and asked why I had on clown shoes.

Chuck love - bad; world-wide

I bought a pair of gold brocade Chuck's at Jack's that are easily my favorite consumer product I ever purchased.

When I was flying back from Edinburgh in 2007 I got pulled aside for 'enhanced screening' by the airport security.

After they got done with all their poking and wanding I was putting my shoes back on. The security guard watched me for a second, and then leaned close.

"Nice shoes, mate," he said.

Sorry guys but Chucks are the dumbest looking shoes. Your youth can be vicariously lived so much better with a skateboard or a Kiss Army T-shirt.

The gold ones mighta been an exception.

Okay, I'm confused, because I got a letter from them 2 weeks ago saying they were selling the store and retiring. Liquidation sale, including some store fixtures. More hyperbole or did the plan change?

Jack himself now lives in Hawaii (he's a golf junkie). Has for a number of years. I don't think he even owns the store anymore.

Store owners Jack and Connie Amundson are clearing out their entire stock of footwear — from Chuck Taylor canvas throwbacks to Allen Edmonds dress oxfords. Everything must go, they say, even the store fixtures.

The Amundsons — who've been living in Hawaii since 2007 and running the business remotely — have decided to finally sell the store and retire. They hope to close the transaction in January.

"We just decided this was the year to do it," says Jack Amundson, 77, in a recent phone interview.

Once the clearance sale is complete, the Amundsons intend to sell the business to current store employees Brian and Allie LaFleur.
...

It's unclear whether the new owners will retain the Jack's Shoes name.
