Smashy-smashy!

Postby supaunknown » Tue Oct 12, 2010 2:10 pm

Jay Limestahl, 49, was playing his guitar (or bass?) in front of the City-County Building. Apparently things didn't go well. He threw it at a car and then Belushi'd the instrument into itty-bitty pieces.

"He told officers he had been drinking and was mad at his bass," DeSpain said. "He said he didn't mean to scare anyone."

I could see getting mad at a bass player and smashing him or her but please leave the poor defenseless instruments alone. Every bass is special.

I hope it was a five or more string bass. They do not deserve to live.

It's his stimulus plan for American instrument manufacturers.

I smashed & stomped on my Ibanez Roadster II at the Mango Grill. Long story short was that there was inner-band frustration plus the drama of my (then) current girlfriend and former girlfriend both in attendance. Totally regretted it. The bass was cheap ($25 used), but it sounded good and was comfy to play. Broke off a couple tuning pegs and fucked up the neck. I kept it and have since bought a replacement neck and tuners. Someday when I get more time I'll fix it up and sell it to somebody else so they can smash it.

Once saw the Buddy Holly-lookin' dude from Coolhand Band throw a red guitar after a few songs at O'Cayz. He was having a real hard time tuning it. After failing to tune it he sort of just boiled over and threw it flat on the ground and ran off stage. It wasn't quite rock & roll.

I don't recall him ever chucking his guitar, but he did once chuck his dinner and a few drinks at me in the form of vomit from the stage. Now THAT'S rock'n'roll. Like being at a power-pop Gwar show.

Five-stringers and beyond have more respect for their instruments than that. Every smashed bass I've seen has been a four-string.

Perhaps, Walter, you could use your contacts to see just what kind of instrument our local angry and drunk (but no doubt gifted) street musician destroyed.

4 strings are for simpletons.

Ha! ZIIIING!

Amongst my crowd, I often find myself defending Clapton from naysayers, and Exhibit A is always Cream. But it's Disraeli Gears, 'cuz man... Hank... Fresh Cream really kinda sucks.

Smashing a 6 string bass would be hard work. Those things are heavy. You'd be better off throwing it in a fire.

My pappy always said, "Never trust a bass with more than one truss rod."
