Smoke alarm ordinance for home owners starts Aug 15

Postby Beaver » Sat Aug 07, 2010 4:05 pm

I wonder how many home owners will get new smoke alarms to comply with this. I heard the fine is about $150 but they aren't going to inspect homes.

Under the ordinance passed last year, all smoke alarms must have a 10-year lithium battery in a tamper-resistant alarm unit. 9-volt batteries will no longer be used UNLESS they are being used as a battery back-up to a hard-wired alarm.

The ordinance also requires additional alarms in the residence:
-In each bedroom
-In each sleeping area
-Within six feet of each door leading to a bedroom or sleeping area of each unit
-On each floor of the building

I think the biggest thing it will affect is insurance if you have a fire and didn't install these. I don't mind the type of smoke alarm, but I find the amount of them to be a little silly.

Me too. Smoke alarms are lifesavers, but why should I have three within six feet of one another? That's what I'd have to do in my little house if I followed the ordinance to the letter.

In case the bedroom doors are closed, I'm guessing.

Think of it this way: what's the cost of a set of these alarms vs. homeowner's insurance? And with the alarms you should (hopefully) never have to invoke the full fire damage benefits of that policy.

I think there is redundancy built into the code so that should one detector fail, there are others nearby sleeping areas that will provide coverage.

Yeah, it could seem like overkill in some home layouts, but the cost / effort is minimal compared to the potential benefit.

Looks like we're going to need 6, maybe 7. These look like they meet spec.

That's about a hundred bucks for a complete set. I'd rather it was at a different time because we're already recovering from two unexpected large expenses in succession, but we can handle it.

The First Alert SA305CN on rabble's Amazon page linked above is indeed listed on the Madison Fire Department pdf of acceptable alarms. $13.79 each, not bad at all.

Well I guess this thread inspired me and I went ahead and purchased the ones linked to. Plus it had free shipping so not a bad deal. Thanks for the link.
