Leo Burt, a blast from the past

Postby Beaver » Wed Jul 21, 2010 9:03 am

The FBI is going to speak today 7/21 about the search for Leo Burt, the 1970 Sterling Hall bomber who was never caught. I wonder what they will say. Has he surfaced after Dwight Armstrong died a few weeks ago?

This site has a lot of theories about him: http://leoburt.com/

And old dorm mate of mine was a member of the UW crew (Leo Burt was a coxswain) and later shared a house with Burt. Everytime Leo Burt's name appears in the news, the FBI talks to him to see if he has any new info on the fugitive.

I would think after 5 years or so the FBI would realize Leo isn't going to contact a former roommate. Still no FBI news today about Leo.

This is the FBI's "announcement"?

Sorry for the dated reference, but in other news, Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.

On vacation this past April in South Carolina, I met (poolside when my daughter and his granddaughter were playing together in the water), and spoke at length with, a former FBI agent who was part of the team that took down David Fine. It was an interesting conversation.

Yes not much of a news flash from the FBI. Still no idea where Leo Burt is or if he is alive.

Nice work. The FBI could use people with skills like you two have. Here is an interesting Mother Jones article from 1979 about the bombing.

The age-enhanced photos from the FBI website look a lot like Michael Gross from Family Ties. Has anyone checked him out?

You may be on to something. I was thinking Alex Trabek who is from Canada. Leo escaped to Canada and came back as Trabek.

And I was thinking James Cromwell. The article Beaver linked to is a good read. Was Ray Ellis ever located?

And I wonder why David Newman left Pete Bobo's first name out of the article. Everybody knew it, it wasn't a secret. Bobo (or whoever he was) was one of the scariest people I ever met, and rumors that he fingered Armstrong in Canada were rampant at the time.

Maybe in time some journalist/historian will find the patience to do a FOIA on the FBI's old files. It might be time to document just exactly how deeply the anti war movement on a national scale, not just in Madison, was coopted or distorted (as Donald reminded us in another thread) by government (or quasi-government) forces.

sno, I think those FOIA requests have been made and processed. Also, check the Michael Fellner collection at Historical Society archives for all the Red Squad/Affinity Squad files. Interesting stuff -- that's where I found the MPD undercover memo on a 1968 Muhammad Ali appearance at the Field House.
