4th of July Fireworks...

Postby Nabashalam » Sun May 16, 2010 6:26 pm

Can anyone tell me if there are any fireworks displays on the actual day of Sunday, the 4th of July in or around Madison:?:

Yes.

BTW, from today's channel3000.com:

Fireworks and how they might be affecting the environment and the health of residents is the subject of a new debate in Madison.

The Madison Environmental Justice Organization is asking a city committee to look into whether fireworks are sending chemicals into the soil and water in city parks, particularly Warner Park where the annual Rhythm & Booms celebration is held.

The group's members have concerns about metals in the fireworks, and a chemical called perchlorate, which makes fireworks burn faster, WISC-TV reported. Members cited studies that perchlorate could cause thyroid hormone issues if too much is ingested into the body, and they said they're worried it might be getting into the groundwater supply on the city's north side.

I guess I should have been more explicit. If there are 4th of July fireworks on the actual 4th, where would they be?

Thanks Henry!

Most small towns around Madison. The Memorial Union's fireworks might be on the Fourth, but I'm not sure.

Monona is the only one I know for sure. Probably the only worthy one to watch on the fourth.

R and Booms is on the 3rd.

Are you just gonna pick a lake?

My boat is on Monona so if I go Mendota I have to be through the locks by 10pm.

Actually I have heard the Unions is quite good.

But I have watched Winnequas from Monona for the past 3 years and am not too impressed. I actually run a MSCR pontoon boat trip for R&Bs as a volunteer Captain on the 3rd. Kinda strange cuz it's usually the week before the 4th...

Maybe I should contact the Union and see what they have on tap for the 4th... other then beer... :)

Shorewood Hills usually has them on the 4th.

I saw some nice ones at Maple Bluff a couple of years ago. Definitely visible on Lake Mendota.

One of the coolest things on the 4th is if you get a good vantage point (usually up high), you can see roman candles and other amatuer fireworks shooting off all over the city. In the middle of one of the lakes (ideally Mendota) would be good, too.

Despite my namesake, I wasn't aware that the Union ever had fireworks in recent years. I've watched R&B from the Terrace, but haven't seen anything fired off of it before.

According to the 2010 lock schedule, they will have "expanded hour in the morning and evening" on July 4th as well. Too bad they don't just mention what those hours are. It is a schedule after all!

Thank you... I realized they had extended hours for R&Bs , which oddly is on the 3rd of July instead of the week before hand, but didn't realize they were extended for the 4th also...

Thanks Again all!
