Yard signs are sprouting up. There must be some election of the municipal or small-region variety imminent.

Mud, muck, and messy dogs. Going through spring to get to summer is like a 15 hour 4-connection flight to Hawaii. Sitting by the bathrooms the whole way.

Hmmm, well I am starting to see a lot more people wearing costumes. You know the dressed-up, weird, make you stare or laugh stuff.

Large clumps of cat hair on my carpet.

My cat will be coughing up the first hairball of the season in a couple weeks.

Birds flying north!

College girls (and, today, a campus-touring mom) wearing sandals/flipflops. Seriously, ladies? Though at least that's a surefire way to tell where they're from. Only northerners would consider "rainy and overcast, with highs in the mid-40s" a balmy delight.

Two Robins seen on Cedar. Crocuses seen on Hickory. It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

Yesterday I saw rabbits frolicking out front of Genna's. And people were drinking outside. And Leprechauns. There were definitely really big rabbits and Leprechauns.

Snowmelt formed a puddle on some plastic mulch I've got lying in the back yard, and yesterday five different kinds of birds were taking baths in the puddle. It was fun to watch -- the biggest birds wallowed right in the water and got soaking wet, and the littler ones hopped around the edges and took fastidious little dip-baths. The fun went on for a good hour before everyone was clean. I could just feel how happy they were to get rid of the winter's dust and grime.

Compost is thawed and turned as of today, raised bed soil, likewise; and two male robins battled the whole time for summer rights to my garden and berries...to the victor will go no spoils, however, as I use bird blocking fabric on my berry bushes. They are welcome to the serviceberries, though.

A dozen+ ticks taken off the dogs after a mile or so walk yesterday. None had dug in, but now is the time to get the Frontline on. Saw three cranes starting to do the neutron dance of love. First cowbird spotted today.

Ticks this early? I don't believe it. I've never seen one earlier than June. There's no way that's possible. Time for new bifocals.

Oh yeah, there's ticks in march. Usually they're in all the tall dried grass during my second trout fishing outing of the early season.

Yesterday I filled the tires on the Orange Sportster, backed out of the garage, hit the starter button and rolled off! First ride of the year and no problems.

Definite yes on the ticks. If it's above freezing they'll be active. I even found one on my leg back on a 38 degree day late last November, though the bastard was moving real slow.

I saw my favorite sign of spring a couple weekends ago, when I was visiting family with my boyfriend: weight-restriction signs (for semis, etc.) posted out in the country.
