Probably because many of us hate children and want them miserable as possible. If that means enforced footwear, all the better. It's our culture, it might not be nice, it might not be pretty, it might not get to go barefoot everywhere it wants...but it's ours and we're proud of it.

You can't be for real.

You know, in some cultures the women routinely go about bare breasted. Should we allow the same in our schools in an effort to be pan-cultural? I don't know about you, but I had a hard enough time paying attention in some of my classes without such distractions.

In some cultures cannibalism isn't uncommon. There is a compelling argument to be made that this would be preferable to hot lunch. Maybe you're not thinking big enough, Galoot. Get on that.

Bewildering, Galoot. Just bewildering. You assert that "modern shoes treat your feet like a board" or something, which is patently untrue but regardless--it's offered without any argument or evidence. Whereas there are any number of objects that one can see lying on the ground when walking down a hallway Things harder than a sole. Things that could puncture, cut, or infect. It's inarguable.

Let's do away with seatbelts and DDT while we're at it. We used to be much less restrictive on those things, too.

I guess this is where we're at, folks. The economy is hell bound, civil liberties have been systematically dismantled over the last eight years and all some of these law and order school administrators can worry about are kids barefoot in school. Yes, this is a great object lesson for all your over-privileged little shits, now isn't it?

Give me a fucking break ...Emotionally charged? What the hell are you snorting?

yes, OJ, East has as specific rule against wearing baseball hats, or any hats, at school. Why do you ask?

Galoot. You're so indie and hot. I wish I could break free of my mental trappings like you. I'm a slave to institutionalism and all of its restrictive social norms. Its sooooo chilling that I am "forced" to wear shoes while in the presence of others. I'm afraid, please free my mind for me. Lets hit the bong together and dream of a perfect utopian world where no one is "forced" to wear shoes in public. While we are at it, all the women should be free of their bras and shirts.

Anti-social socialism. Practiced every day on the near east side.

As far as I know, my employee handbook doesn't "expressly forbid bare feet" either. But going around minus shoes would earn some scorn from my coworkers, or worse. Isn't one of the fundamental roles for a school the preparation of students for the workforce? I mean, if your kid is going to end up at Evergreen, then great. But that doesn't apply to the majority of East grads.

To term this a cultural prejudice is great, though. Here are some other cultural prejudices:

- Drive on the right side of the road.

- Settle disputes peacefully rather than violently.

- One wife per husband.

- No child labor.

I think I've figured it out. The foot fanciers here are the hippie analog to that jerk-off father who gets into it with the little league coach for not putting his kid in to pinch hit and win the game, which his kid who shits roses would no doubt do.

Assholes, every damn one of 'em. Somewhere there's a busted condom we have to blame for this ludicrous debate, I suspect.

Because I didn't see it mentioned specifically in the handbook. If you are aware of that restriction on dress, why would you shocked at others?

That restriction on dress is posted on all the major entrances to East High, along with several other dress restrictions. No mention at all is made of footwear.

I went to school at JMM and specifically remember our school requiring footwear and parachute pants (1980s).

Galoot, you are pulling our collective chains with this horseshit, right?

Considering our mid-80's "chop suey," I wholeheartedly agree.

I learned my lesson the hard way and I wasn't even barefooted. Wearing a pair of Cecil sandals, I misstepped and tore off a toetail from a big toe.

It grew back in about a year.

You should have gone bear footed.
