Flowering Tree ID Needed

Postby northwoods_babe » Tue May 22, 2007 6:02 pm

Does anyone know what kind of trees are in bloom in the Mansion Hill neighborhood right now?

The trees are very tall and are located on the block of W Gilman that is between N Henry and N Carroll.

The trees have small, sweet-smelling, white blossoms that hang like bunches of grapes.

Thanks in advance.

I have not seen the trees in the Mansion Hill neighborhood, but I will hazard a guess that the tree you describe are Black Locust or Honey Locust. They're in bloom all over the city right about now.

If you ask me, the scent of the blooms is, like, the best thing ever.

Oh thank you. You've solved a mystery that's puzzled me every spring for many years.

Growing up near the UP, my house had a catalpa in the backyard, but other than that, I am unfamiliar with southern trees.

I agree with you about the scent of the flowers. Now I am going to try track down an essential oils company that makes a scent just like it. Thanks again.
