I'll give you the great price and shopping while you wait, but I've had problems there in the past.

I only started going there because a former roommate worked there and I could (at first) request that he was the mechanic that did the work on my car. Well the shop manager stopped honoring my requests and it was all downhill from there. I think I had to bring my car back 3 times before they put the struts on properly.

Fact of all this is they don't pay worth a shit which means they don't retain anyone with any skills. The real mechanics end up getting better paying jobs at real shops. They mostly do tires and mufflers (real basic stuff) anyway - nothing real complicated.

This was a good 5+ years ago and maybe things have changed, but I highly doubt it. I would not trust them to do anything more than fix a flat.

I just stumbled upon this thread while searching the forums. My mom, who lives near Hilldale, drives a 1990 Nissan Stanza. I wanted to get a thorough inspection done on the car, just to find out what essential work needs to be done on it.

She usually takes her car to the Firestone at West Towne Mall, but they ALWAYS try to pitch additional repairs whenever she goes there for an oil change. I've witnessed the same thing as well.

Anyhow, when I lived in Madison 15+ years ago, I remember passing by Foreign Car Specialists on Regent and Dunn's Import Auto on University near/in Middleton. Any comments on their work and/or reputation?

It's been a while since I was in the car business, but I've taken cars to Dunn's. Not the cheapest, but he always seemed honest and they did good work.

Have her try West Town Monona Tire. A bit more expensive due to their location, but they're honest.

Thanks for the tip. I think I'll stop by there and see what they can do. I've noticed that the vast majority of independent shops are only open M-F from 8:00am to 5:30pm at the latest, so West Town Monona Tire's extended hours would make things a lot easier for her.

The choice of mechanic is dependent on the make of car being serviced... especially with the independents.

I was to Phoenix once for our Volvo and found Harry to be extremely helpful and conscientious. He told me what he was going to do and how long it was going to take. I was very specific in what I wanted done (as I do as much of my own work myself). On picking up the car, he indicated some things I should keep an eye on (some of which I've since dealt with). It was a bit pricey, but I did not have to go back and he did what he said he was going to do (unlike the Volvo dealerships I've dealt with... and who have charged even more).

For VW's, I have heard good things about Percy's (on Monroe) and Courtesy Auto, though I have not had the opportunity to use them (as both indicated things that I could do to save them from charging me for a likely very expensive operation). Zimbrick VW West has been pretty good for very manufacturer-specific things, and Zimbrick VW East has apparently served my in-laws well for years (though I have not had the best experiences with them).

Bens VeeDub Shop is THE place for VW repair. Ben's work has been featured in national magazines...and as a vw shop owner, he actually drives VWs. Top notch customer service...and great prices.
In fact..my car is there right now for some performance/resto work
