Don the Muffler Man on Old University has worked on my car for years. I trust them.

I've been going to Jensen's on Regent at Orchard for years. Honest and straightforward. And it's nice to drop off my car and walk the few blocks home.

I second that. I love them - I am on my 5th car, over the last 16 years, and I have never had any problems with them.

I know you asked about downtown, but Capitol Tire on Odana and Westowne Amoco (next to the old Chi Chis) are both good.

Not downtown, but on the near South Side, I have two recommendations:
1. Phoenix: I think the guys name is Harry. Specializes in foreign cars. Seems to do very quality work.
2. Madison Automotive: The guy is really nice, I have never felt overcharged, they can get you in and out quickly and they usually have a loaner car for you.
Both of these places are off of Applegate Road, close to the Beltline.

When I lived in the neighborhood, I was loyal to the Car X on East Wash. They always were really nice, and replaced my muffler for free one time because they pointed out it was under warranty with them, which I didn't know going in. I have a friend who swears by them too. Don't go to the west-side car x though, I heard those guys are assholes.

:D

I've been to Phoenix on the South Side a few times and they're pretty good, I'd recommend them...

and how were you "raped" by Harry?

Phoenix: The usual mechanic bullshit, over charged, over worked, unnecessary work for the dumb girl who knows nothing about her European car that she loves. Love the condescending attitude that it was served with also.

This was only discovered later after finding a great mechanic that I so far feel I can trust and of course after give â??harryâ?Â

If you're on the near east side, try ARA, near the train tracks, just west of First & East Wash, on the Marling Lumber side. Casey lives in the neighborhood, gets tons of repeat business, understands the value of keeping a good old car running well, and, as far as I know, is not a rapist, metaphorical or otherwise (as an assault survivor, I find that metaphor is especially distasteful).

Forget about downtown. In all honesty, Farm and Fleet is your best bet. You get a great price, honest mechanics, and can shop for all sorts of great shit while you are waiting.

rape (rāp)
n.
1. The crime of forcing another person to submit to sex acts, especially sexual intercourse.
2. The act of seizing and carrying off by force; abduction.
3. Abusive or improper treatment; violation: a rape of justice.

Sorry if I offended, but I do believe I used the word correctly. As the # 3 definition.
And Casey from ARA is my trustworthy mechanic now! Glad to see others love him. Great guy and you are right, he also works on my kidâ??s 1968 Dodge as well as my European. He keeps them both running affordably.
