777

Postby madkitkat » Mon Mar 05, 2007 11:49 am

I've been noticing these mysterious "777" stickers around town -- on bus stops, benches, windows, coffee shop counters, etc. They direct the curious to www.seventology.com, which calls 7/7/07 a "Day of Perfection" and continues...
"We have chosen Madison, WI as our home for this most special event. In celebration, we are unveiling something big, something that will forever change the life of anyone who lets it..."

Blah blah blah.

"Anyone who lets it"? So if you don't get it, it's your own fault, I suppose, for not being open to "Septem Pro Prosperitas."

They have a countdown, set at 9 days, 23 years, 19 minutes, 27 seconds and counting down. What? That's next week, not July 7.

And why are huge numbers of people planning weddings for July 7 this year?

People! It's just another day. Pretty much like how New Year's is just another day (but a great excuse to get schnockered on champagne).

Can someone please explain to me the significance of a date that corresponds to an fairly arbitrary calender?

Guys are probably pushing for 7/7/07 as a wedding date so that it is easier to remember. Less likely to forget about an anniversary that way.

I've been wondering about this 777 thing as well.

Stickers everywhere. Even my Onion had a seventology.com stamp on it.

Some pretty weird artistic stuff on the blog--

777 - 111 = 666.

Anyone consider that?

In St. Mary Hospital, to dial help, you dial 777.

Seven Sacraments, Seven Deadly Sins and one other group of seven

777 is the sign of christ. I have no idea of this group, but my guess is that they expect to unveil the second coming of Christ of 7/7/7

Goddamnit. I have a real love-hate relationship with this kind of viral marketing. I love well-executed shit like this, love poking around these sites and seeing other people's intriguing theories, etc. But I'm invariably disappointed when they're unveiled as some weak-tit new energy drink or record store or whatever this might be.

Time to do some sleuthing.

Remember that old Johnny Rivers song, with some lyrics,"I'm the seventh son, of a seventh son, I'm the one. I can heal the sick and raise the dead." ?

Wikipedia has quite a bit on the whole seventh son of a seventh son myth.

Nothing worthwhile popping up on Google, Blogpulse, Technorati, Digg, del.icio.us, Flickr, Facebook, or Myspace yet. Just a couple not-really helpful posts on Craigslist, the first of which feels like an insider planted question. My hunch is that it's a Seagram's or a casino promo, but I'm still poking around.

If you guys wanna see an awesome example of why enigmatic viral campaigns are both fun and disappointing, check out this MeFi thread. Another recent favorite: the Origami Project. And I'm pretty sure the 777 counter is similar to the phased roll-out of the Origami Project site, counting down to up and coming dates where more will be "revealed," incrementally building up the hype to 07/07/07.

I recall that nothing happened on 7/7/77
or 8/8/88, 9/9/99, 01/01/01.

I know, let's ask sheppy!
sheppy knows everything!

I've got Mose Allison doing it on tape.

The first night game at Wrigley Field took place on 8/8/88, but was rained out after 3 innings.

Guess that means we're looking at rain in the forecast for 07/07/07 or maybe it means that the Cubs will win the World Series in 2007 or maybe it means that 2007 will be the year that people will finally start to pay me the respect that I so rightfully deserve or if they don't, then 07/07/07 will be the day that I exact my revenge on those filthy people who have betrayed me.

Yes, revenge.

Sweet, sweet revenge.

The domain is privately registered through Domains by Proxy, a company based in Arizona that prides itself on keeping registrants' identities secret. Drats, foiled again!

But, you're probably right: casino promo or another nasty beer-energy drink hybrid. Sigh.

Their installation of WordPress is up to date, nothing fun in the source code, nothing revealing in the ActionScript that's inside the swf counter.

They registered through GoDaddy on Feb. 1 with their whois info hidden, as noted above, and using on Media Temple's Grid-Server plan for hosting, using VerticalResponse for their list management, and a Panasonic DMC-LZ2 and a Nikon Coolpix 5600 for their photos, all of which appear to have been shot between 11am-3pm on March 1 (including the pic where they say they swapped out hand stamps over the weekend).

No favicon, no robots.txt, and the link to their stencil pdf is busted. Can't find it hiding in any other standard WordPress directories either.

It seems to be a very basic site which unfortunately doesn't offer too many more opportunities for digging around. I could probably divine a profile of who the people are working on this, but I still just want to find a specific ad firm name or product name, damnit. If they were cool, they would've at least left a few tantalizing easter eggs for people to find. Boo-urns.

But when they slip up, I'll be ready :)

oh you beat me to it - I instantly thought of that game when I read Sugar's post. Were you there too? ...good times...
