Have you voted yet?

Postby Henry Vilas » Tue Feb 20, 2018 1:34 pm

I sometimes vote early at a library, but I figured there will be a low turnout today with no lines. I was right. Ms Vilas and I just returned from the short walk to our polling place, Trinity UMC on Vilas (of course). We were numbers 101 and 102.

I usually vote after work, but I had a morning appointment with time afterward to swing by Fitchburg Fire Station #1 before heading in. The machine said I was #273 at 9:20 (there must have been a morning rush, assuming I was looking at the right number on the display, because I was the only voter in the room the whole time).

I was #141 at Olbrich at 8:55a. Many more people behind the tables than in front of them -- one voter in the room ahead of me, two came in after, and I passed two more on their way in when I headed out -- but the poll workers seemed pleased about the morning rush (then tailing off, I think). We have a hotly contested County Supervisor race that's raised a lot of interest in the neighborhood so I expect we'll have a good turnout, at least for Spring primaries.

By the way, my expired WI ID will apparently be good for at least the general election in November -- a year and a half past the date I should have renewed. Unfortunately, DMV will only accept it as ID for renewal up to a year after it expired, so it looks like I have a trip to the Madison East DMV office in my very near future (30 days and counting) :(

I was the only voter at my poling place this afternoon. Well, over 100 had voted before me. It was weird to see about 8 volunteers there, and no voters. One of my kids just turned 18, so I asked about voter registration. When my kid went in to register, they said "oh, your father said you'd be here". Thanks, Dad, embarrassed my kid.

The poll workers at Olbrich seemed a little disappointed that I was already registered. They were raring to go! I hope they get a nice crowd this evening, registered and unregistered, to keep them busy and give them some practice for April 3.
