To which the honest response from Johnson's staff probably would have been "no, he believes in creationism".

So I guess that means scientists don't "believe" in electricity, since that is also a theory.

If we're gonna scrutinize semantics, shouldn't we know more about the "evolution" in which someone's beliefs are questioned? Why automatically assume this is about human (or even biological) evolution?

Nobody is assuming. The guy who was asking Johnson's lackey was quite specific. He asked if Johnson believed in human evolution.

Yep, sorry. I had edited my initial response to more appropriately direct it to GUTC's question. I should have been more clear.

Ah, gotcha. And yes, I don't believe in evolution, I know it is as much of a scientific fact as anything can possibly be.

And I also very much doubt that Johnson believes that humans evolved. He probably has a lot of company in Wisconsin who are just as ignorant.

His religion believes in a young earth; it also denies human evolution.

Somewhere in Washington a strategy is being formulated. I look forward to the senator's hedging when this topic is revisited.

Now that we've resolved that, does the Senator believe in intelligent falling? How about the Biblical value of pi?

Inquiring minds want to know.

To be fair, much of that company fails to act like they've evolved

this may have some relevance to the snap thread and some others . . . the phrase "survival of the fittest" was not even coined by darwin -- it was herbert spencer, i think 16 or 20 years before on the origin of species came out. i am not so sure darwin was a big fan of his theory being transmuted into social darwinism, either.

spencer is also famous for, amongst other things, the quote "the only result of saving people from their folly is to fill the world with fools" or something close.

i think he also founded herbert spencer gifts at the mall. once i asked the staff for help and they refused.

Don't be obtuse. Electricity is demonstrable, evolution is not.

Or you're just missing my point. "Belief" is not a word that is relateable to the scientific method. Neither is "faith."

I believe in the American Dream. I believe the children are our future. I believe in Crystal Light (because I believe in me).

I find that modern evolutionary theory is comprised of compelling arguments and strong, supportive evidence.

Do you see the difference?

Johnson is ruled by faith, not by knowledge.

I know the semantic distinctions. One of my undergraduate majors was philosophy. I am well versed in the various meanings of belief, knowledge and truth. You quibble.

And spreadsheets and white boards. Because they validate the faith-based numbers and ideas you put into them by transforming them into whole new marvelous transcendent faith-based numbers and ideas. And, thus, knowledge? GIGO. Though my sense has always been that Senator Johnson's spreadsheets are mainly empty.
