Madison Onion to cease publishing July 25th

Postby Dipper » Fri Jul 12, 2013 9:59 am

An Onion advertiser I know received this email from the Onion:

This is to inform you that our last issue of the Onion will be July 25th as we’ve chosen not to renew our contract. We have valued our partnership with you over the course of the past two years that we’ve handled the advertising for the Onion. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. Again, it’s been a pleasure working with you and I hope we can continue to serve your advertising needs.

Best Regards,
Andrea Hansen
Onion Sales Manager

Not that we didn't see this coming, but I'm still a little amazed Capital Newspapers couldn't make money off this franchise in a college town like Madison.

If this is true, it's the sad end of an era. When I moved to Madison in 1999, the print Onion was at its glorious best. The staff hadn't yet decamped for New York, and I looked forward to a new issue every week. In print, Onion headlines had an impact that they lack online, and in general the satire doesn't seem as sharp as it once did. Just now I scanned the many headlines on the main page of theonion.com and only laughed at this one: "Jay-Z CEO Resigns After Stock Price Plunges."

Hi, former Madison Onion staffer here.

A sad day indeed if true, but in case it isn't stunningly apparent the quality of both The Onion and The A.V. Club fell way off when, you know, nearly all the writers left.

You can find many of them at the just-launched http://thedissolve.com/.

Oh no! I'm mostly wondering if any other Madison weekly would print Savage Love? I guess I could get it online, but...I don't know. That's just not as much fun.

I heard a lot about the AV Club writers leaving, and they have skillfully handled the publicity surrounding the launch of the Dissolve. The saga of the comedy writers I don't know much about.

I've been trying to come up with the perfect Onion-style headline for their Madison demise, but all I can come up with is "LOCAL PAPER CASHED."

Jeez. I remember talking to these guys when they were trying to get it started. Just another student coupon rag. Their "big idea" was to have coupons along the bottom of the page so they'd be easier to cut out. I'm almost positive I threw them out.

Or perhaps something to the effect that it has been taken under the benevolent wing of Rupert Murdoch.

How long will the paper and ink version of Isthmus last? It gets skinnier every week.

Hey! I was there briefly with you as an (unpaid) intern, dumping content into their (then) new CMS. About 10 years ago. Not a great gig, but it's always fun to say "I worked at The Onion".

As far as a paper version goes, I wonder if another publisher would have any interest in publishing a local edition.

Maybe now the PDQ stores will call off their snit and let Isthmus back in.

This isn't true. Page count changes based on ads per given week.
