I drive a cab. This sucks:
Madison's mayor has upped the stakes against cab drivers caught cruising down State Street without a fare, and taxi operators said they aren't happy about it.
Madison police will begin enforcing the cruising ban Monday night, Mayor Paul Soglin said. City ordinance prohibits driving along State Street unless the taxi is there to pick up a specific fare.
"The ordinances say no cruising," Soglin said after meeting with representatives from three Madison cab operators. "Us ordinary mortals -- Madison citizens -- are not allowed to (cruise)."
Soglin said he would allow three city committees to look at changes to the ordinance, opening up the debate to public comment.
I actually agree about the day time hours when all the bicycles and skateboarders are on the street. We're trying to get Soggy to see reason about bar time hours. I think every cab driver is a little shocked that once starting this Mayor Soglin refuses to even listen about the late night hours when there are no buses and few pedestrians and all the crowd is bar crowd. Even regular bar time is self explanatory. Patrons need us. But its the other times like Mifflin Street block party, Halloween, and Badger games that his obstinance goes against all logic. Cabbing is a hard job. At most times of the day its so slow you can hardly make a living. This means when there are thousands of extra people even all four companies together barely have enough vehicles to disburse all the crowd. We can't work a Badger game just picking up the people who call a cab, there are just way too many. Its not just a matter of our income, which usually stinks, its about a responsibility to the people relying on you to get home or to their hotel. If they all had to call people would be waiting until five in the morning to get home. Not only that but we have enough calls on top of flags that our dispatchers can't assign them all. If everyone had to call they would have three times as many calls on the board. That's pretty much impossible. Soglin seems to want to make the downtown beautiful at the expense of peoples access to it, I think he's being totally unrealistic.
I voted for him hoping he would bring back some of the spirit of the town that I didn't recognize after Mayor Dave's tenure. Instead, after hearing about him yelling at three different cab drivers on State Street he's just starting to sound like a crazy old man. He's allowing these committees but he's already started enforcing the new rules as if they would pass and in spite of clear reasons to reconsider the rules during the late hours, which means he's not really listening to anyone. He's made up his mind, is acting reactionary, and is not listening to anyone! That's not what I expect out of a mayor at all
