Hotel Red Triumphs over the NIMBYs!

Postby swimmingupstream » Tue Aug 16, 2011 4:41 pm

It is great to see Hotel Red finally getting to open. The property owner had to spend so much money fighting off the NIMBY neighbors, including the former alder, that he ran out of funds during construction.

Now that it is open it is fair to say that Bob Sieger's legacy in the neighborhood will be enshrined for generations to come on that corner, long after the naysayers who will be quickly forgotten. http://host.madison.com/wsj/business/ar ... 002e0.html

Sieger's funds ran short at the end by several million. It is absurd to say he spend several million up front trying to get the neighborhood to agree to the plan.

For one thing, he acted as his own architect so he never ran up a bill with an outside architectural firm for the plans or presentations. He even built his own models to take to committees during the approval process. Everything seemed to be done on a shoestring, in a way.

I wouldn't blame the neighborhood on this one. His financial backers simply refused to continue to loan to him and he had to sell the project half finished.

From what I understand, Sieger's legacy in that neighborhood is still that he manages to park an incredible number of cars on his properties each Badger game day.
