STUDIO 60 SHOULD HAVE BURIED 30 ROCK

How can cultural elitists like ourselves put TV in the Culture category? Well, where the hell else is it going to fit?

STUDIO 60 SHOULD HAVE BURIED 30 ROCK

Postby blunt » Tue Feb 12, 2008 7:15 pm

Been watching the DVD's straight through.
Brilliant writing and powerful acting.
Plus I'm a sucker for backstage comedy/melodrama.
Absolutely one of the best shows ever cancelled.
Kicks 30 Rock's pebble ass.

Studio 60 is twice as long and not even half as funny.

Alec Baldwin > Chandler Bing

I don't think its fair to compare them really, 30 Rock was going for a much more screwball route in the vein of actual SNL and Conan Sketches. Dr. Spaceman and ME WANT FOOD have no place on Studio 60.

Keep watching... it gets worse over time as the stories focus more and more on moronic romance plot arcs that are no better written than the romance in star wars ep 2.

Nope. went all the way.
Still light years better than Rock.
Watching all the Rocks.
Dumb. Shallow. Not funny.

30Rock seems to me like a conan sketch in 22 minutes. The most absurd stuff in a sitcom since Arrested Development.

can't believe you don't at least find it funny.

I was all ready to like Studio 60, as I never missed a West Wing. But Sorkin just couldn't get out of his own way on that show. He indulged every single impulse and ended up creating an entirely unbelievable, phoney little world. I mean, do you actually think actors on a sketch comedy show engage in monologues about racism... during the weekly live show?! Are they actually this boring and unfunny in real life?

With West Wing and even Sports Night, you could buy the egos and the soliloquoys because these are people who everyone knows take themselves too seriously. And there were some comic foils to pull them out of their own self idolotry. But with Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California, USA or whatever the entirely too long title of that show actually was, there weren't any minor characters to bust up the monotony and it showed. And yes, Chandler Bing isn't supposed to play a brooding writer who carries the weight of the world around the set. Sorkin's inability to see that shows he's too wrapped up in his own thing to understand audiences anymore.

Good points, jjoyce.
I know it a melodramatic nighttime soap, and I liked it as such.

But Shipley!
Comparing Rock's junior high talent night with Arrested Development----sacrilige!

Though I like Conan (the anniversary special still coaxes loud guffaws from me) but I am Letterhead forever!

But, like I try restaurants more than once on the off chance they had an off night, I will continue watchinng 30 Rock, maybe drunker or higher---and see if its funny planets align someday.
Doubt it.

Alec Baldwin on 30 Rock is one of the finest television performances ever.

There's nobody on Studio 60, including guest "stars," who could carry his jock, or whatever actors have that is similar to a jock.

Studio 60 blows monkey balls, that subplot about the Christian comedian was ridonkulous. Admittedly, I never liked Aaron Sorkin that much anyway though, not a WW fan at all.

30 Rock is decent, its not on a par of many other comedies on TV, but its pretty good, and Alec Baldwin and Tracey Morgan are great.

At least NBC is behind 30Rock. in 3rd place on thursdays, and they renewed it without a blink, and will keep it on for years to come I'm sure.

I guess I'm just a click off from you guys.
(Or maybe I watched in it just the right mood-- the Oxycontin didn't hurt.)
But I enjoyed the Christian dilemma.
I enjoy the campy writing and the snappy dialog , kinda like Dragnet.
Bar Whitford does an excellent and likeable Lorne.
And I thought Matthew Perry did a bing up job.

OK, that explains the 60 love. No love for Baldwin in 30 Rock wants a much better excuse.

Whoa, peeps!
I worship Alex Baldwin---it's the show itself that I haven't succumbed to.
But I do revolve around your opinions so I'll give it another try.
