What I Learned Watching Law And Order

How can cultural elitists like ourselves put TV in the Culture category? Well, where the hell else is it going to fit?

I learned a lot of this stuff reading "Homicide," the excellent book upon which the excellent (at least for the first two seasons) series was based (author David Simon is also responsible for HBO's "The Wire"). In "Homicide" a couple detectives fill a xerox machine with three sheets of paper, the first two say "TRUE" and the last says "FALSE." They proceed to get the perp to put his hand on the machine, ask him his name and press the button. Out pops a "TRUE". Same for address. Then they ask whether he stabbed some other skel in a drug deal gone wrong or whatever, he says he didn't and out pops "FALSE" at which point he confesses to everything.

Now, that book was written back in the '80s (Simon spent a year with the Baltimore PD's homicide division), when it was likely criminals from bad parts of Baltimore had never encountered a xerox machine, but it's a lesson nevertheless in how stupid a lot of criminals are.

Unused Law & Order intros
I know, kind of off-topic. But they do contain important lessons.

If you are a Patty Hearst-like kidnap victim who is involved in robberies and whose wealthy parents are mortified by you, everything will work out provided you are played by a fresh-looking Amanda Peet.
