Songs that make you go hmmm...

How can cultural elitists like ourselves put TV in the Culture category? Well, where the hell else is it going to fit?

Songs that make you go hmmm...

Postby Ducatista » Fri Apr 27, 2007 3:19 pm

Yeah, this is a tired topic, but a few ad songs have really irked me lately, either because I like the song and hate to see it hawking, or because the whole song would be SO inappropriate for whatever the snippet is advertising, or both:

Violent Femme's "Blister in the Sun" for... Wendy's?

The The's "This is the Day" for Dockers

Propellerhead's "History Repeating" for some hair product

None is as bad as "Lust for Life" for Royal Caribbean, but still. I don't begrudge the copyright holders their fees, but what fucking agency decided, "Hey, this 80s anthem of underachieving inertia would be PERFECT for Dockers" ?

Blister was used (only once) as a timeout song during a Badger football game. Unlike the Wendy's ad, you could actually hear the lyrics.

Just read a business article that says Wendy's has been going downhill since Dave Thomas died. Guess their new corporate bosses are getting desperate in order to regain market share. I wonder how many people under 40 know any Femmes' tunes.

I'd seen those KFC ads a million times with out thinking too much of it (except "what's with that weird little keyboard trill, is that in the original?"), but one day I was in a different room from the TV so I heard but didn't see the commercial come on, and all of a sudden I was hit with a what the fuck? right upside the head.

Also of questionable taste - using the best known song of a band most of which died in a fiery plane crash to sell fried chicken.

Commercial music that would be cool?

Spencer Davis Group's "I'm A Man" as theme music for The Ann Coulter Show.

The more I think about it, the more I like this idea.

Bill Bennett could start his show with "Tumbling Dice."

Limbaugh, of course, would use Bunny Berrigan and His Boys doing, "I Can't Get Started."

The outré ravings of Michelle Malkin might go down a little easier (no pun intended) to the strains of The Vapors' "I'm Turning Japanese (Into the Authorities)."

Would-be Loofah-Master Bill O'Reilly would have a choice - either "Splish Splash" ("...I was taking a bath...") or Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers doing "Dancing Late At Night" ("...I can hear the music I can hear the band / I can smell the late night falafel stand...").

And I wish good health and a quick recover to Tony Snow, if only because of how thunderously I would plotz if his inevitable post-White House show on Fox kicked out the jams with Sabbath doing "Snow Blind."

Who says conservatives can't rock out? Hmmm?

Morningwood's "Nth Degree" for Mercury. You know, the commercials with the girl with the boobs slightly bigger than you'd expect on a car commercial.

The Vonage Woo-Hoo song was bad enough.
If I hear Enzyte's whisle tune again I will render their entire company flaccid by force.
But now, things have gotten even worse:
Alka Seltzer's Plop Plop Fizz Fizz contest winner is bad and so stupid and so inconsequential and SO CATCHY I can't stop hearing it in my head.
Anyone got a pill for that?

For those who like torture:

Hey Henry, I'd bet that lots of us do. I'd say it's a given for the 32 to 40 set.

A Henry quote would have been helpful since you're referencing a post from so far away.
I thought you thought I was Henry and that you did have a pill.

the worst i can think of is CCR's "Fortunate Son" for American Eagle i think.

the commercial played the song up until "oooh that red white and blue" and then cut it off, completely inverting the message of the song.
