"Half Pint" had 1880-81 Winter Right

Postby Donald » Mon Sep 05, 2011 10:12 am

Having survived many a Dakota winter myself, I always thought Laura Ingalls Wilder, who wrote her stories late in life, had exaggerated the winters described in her books, particularly the winter she spent in De Smet, SD, described in her book "The Long Winter." A doctoral student in meteorology has found her descriptions generally accurate. That winter was a bad one as confirmed in data from Midwest weather stations.
