There are very few books I've read more than once.
~Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
~One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey
~Neighbors by Thomas Berger
~Jerusalem Poker by Edward Whittemore
plus, regardless of any perveived racial slurs in the title, this one.
Nobody Loves A Drunken Indian
I HIGHLY recommend this.
Smart, hilarious, poignant, meaningful.
I never read westerns (except The Cowboys, later a John Wayne flick) but this transcends the genre.
A group of "Native Americans" are pssied at at being treated like shit by the governement and decide to steal an entire train and then take over Phoenix and rightfully claim it as their own.
Made into a film called Flap, starring Anthony Quinn, it was the only western ever directed by Sir Carol Reed (Oliver!).
Sadly, I can't find it anywhere.
(Clair Huffaker also wrote Cowboy and The Cossak, The War Wagon, Flaming Star, Hellfighters, etc)
But this book is brilliant.
Probably the only place to locate a copy is in the library storage basement downtown.
What books, zines or other pulp are you reading? What aren't you reading? What should everyone else read?
