Where to go?

Postby Violet_Skye » Sun Sep 15, 2013 2:02 pm

A female friend and I are planning a getaway to somewhere warm, leaving the end of December and returning beginning of January. Caribbean, Central or South America. Not so much interested in shopping and nightlife and kid friendly; more interested in natural, peaceful, historical, authentic, beach, low key. Very budget conscious. Any ideas?

If you are budget conscious, your timing is off. Going over Christmas and New Years will be costly, both in flights and in stays in the Caribbean.

I would rather go another time, but my friend is bound by the academic calendar, so we have to do the best we can.

I know what you mean. I've been to the Caribbean dozens on times over the last 40 years, but when I taught, trips were pricey over winter and spring breaks.

Where did you go? Avoid Venezuela.

If only you'd told her that before she went and got herself kidnapped.

You should go to Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific. The population is only 48 residents from four families. The islanders are descendants of the Bounty mutineers of 1789. The closest civilization, Tahiti, is 1,350 miles away.

I don't know how they survived all these years but they don't look like inbred mutants and it's an amazing to think about their life.

What do they do for food, cloths, schools, doctors, dentists, entertainment? I found some answers here:

Bumped, due to it being a slow day and seeing this renewed my curiosity about where Violet went.

Hahaha I didn't go anywhere tropical. After careful consideration, I decided to save my pennies for a couple weeks in Norway instead, visiting extended family for the first time. Coming up in May! Also, something has been screwy with this site for me for a long time. Every time I hit submit, my posts would disappear. Even today. So I finally emailed the staff, and now it's instantly working. No idea why it didn't before or why it does now, but I'm back.

If you are still planning to explore the natural beauty, historical sights, lovely beaches, and exquisite food then you should consider Indonesia its cheap, warm and memorable

Welcome back. Good decision about your travel plans. Latin America has Zika and other problems. Norway is the happiest place on Earth. viewtopic.php?f=37&t=65636
