8/7/11 -Sad Anniversaries Episode on Books & Beats w Stu Levitan
It was on August 9, 1945 that the U.S. commenced the world’s second atomic bomb attack, on the Japanese city of Nagasaki, killing about 75,000 and leaving several hundred thousand hibakusha, or “survivors.” An in-depth conversation about their plight with Sue Southard, author of the forthcoming Nagasaki.
It was on August 9, 1995 that Jerome John “Jerry” Garcia died. A conversation about the continuing musical and cultural legacy of the Grateful Dead, with musician/radio personality/author David Gans.
It was on August 9, 1975 that Richard Nixon resigned the Presidency. (OK, at least one anniversary is happy). A little wallowing in Watergate, in honor of the unindicted co-conspirator.
