I wish there WAS something that would have a wiping effect on the mind. There are quite a few people I'd use it on.

Just give your desk the once over with a flamethrower before meals.

It's just common sense!

I think what this comes down to is: Don't eat your office desk.

Beyond that, don't eat at your desk unless you have an enclosed office with a door.

Or in the restroom, for that matter. (Some folks need to have these things spelled out.)

Not even this one?

Eh... I guess that's more of a table than a desk.
Never mind.

Bacterial cells outnumber your human ones 10 to 1 INSIDE YOU.

I have a feeling the type of germs may matter more than the number...

Thank you for saving me the trouble of posting this. We are all big festering bags of goo.

What's the germ count on all those public hand sanitizer dispensers?

Never use them and I bite my fingernails. I rarely get sick and never get "food poisoning" kinda reactions.

I'll never be a hand model...

What does being enclosed with a door have to do with it? Serious question.

I'll say this-- If you're going to eat at your desk, for bleedin' jesus' sake, don't eat over your keyboard, mouse, phone, or whatever. And fucking WASH YOUR HANDS afterwards.

Germs be damned when the non-microscopic make me want to go fetal. I've had to use other coworkers' workstations, and sticky/crumby mice/keyboards/desks are just naassssty.

Had one coworker where his monitor was literally stuck to his desk. Yeah I don't know how. People are gross.

Well, considering my ridiculous, un-self-aware manager regularly sneezes, coughs, belches, and who knows what else all over the conference table without even bothering to turn his head, I don't doubt this at all in my case. I wish I could go to work in a bubble. Ugh.

A repair person once told me the most common reason for keyboard malfunctions was sesame seeds.

I am one of the computer support people for my department. Most people eat their breakfast, lunch, snacks at their desk. People come in sick, cough and sneeze into their hands (or worse just let it go), and then go back to work. I'm sure there are more examples but we don't need that visual. Most keyboards and mice are nasty. I have a small container of clean wipes I carry with me but some people get all offended when I clean their keyboard and mouse before resolving their issue. So to keep from ruffling feathers I've made a habit of washing my hands after every help session. Between that and the Purell I have to slather the hand cream on at home. Perhaps this helps build up our immunity to colds and flu? Of more concern, at least for me, is that people spill coffee, tea, soda, and water on their keyboards. There are cups out there with lids that resist spillage. I've even been known to gift a coffee sippy-cup to habitual offenders.

I spend a lot of time at a keyboard and used to eat in my work area. But I made an effort to separate food and work, based on a friend's insight. It makes for a cleaner work space, but it also reinforces a more even-tempered, regular approach to work. It just feels more sane. If I'm hungry, I stop what I'm doing and go elsewhere.

I have to get away from my desk at lunch. If I didn't I'd have gone postal years ago.

I have the same habit as narco and am seldom ill. My career as a hand model ended when I burned my knuckles on the woodburning cook stove when I was 18 months old. The salve the doc mixed up lasted for almost 15 years and even now I wish I had some. When I spilled tomato sauce on my foot 18 months ago the healing process used 1.5 lb of Bacitracin.
