Microwave popcorn harmful

Postby Beaver » Thu Sep 25, 2014 4:21 pm

If you eat Microwave popcorn, you should probably stop. The ingredients and bag are harmful.

http://foodbabe.com/2013/11/12/microwave-popcorn/

"The bag almost all microwave popcorn varieties come in is lined with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This chemical is the same toxic stuff found in teflon pots and pans. It can stay in the environment and in the human body for long periods of time. This chemical when heated has been linked to infertility, cancer and other diseases in lab animals. No long term studies have been conducted on humans, but the EPA lists this substance as a carcinogen."

But it isn't as deadly as getting shot, not to mention that popcorn has another purpose other than causing harm, so why should we even be concerned about this?

Now saliva has been associated with death, but only when swallowed in small amounts over a long period of time.

I'm not sure that lining my insides with teflon would be such a bad thing. Wouldn't have to worry about constipation, for one thing.

Basing nutritional decisions on amateur-investigator bloggers is harmful. Microwave popcorn, on the other hand, is junk food and everyone knows it.

The food babe is an idiot. I'll equate her to Dr. Oz. Oh and this is kinda funny.

Buy a bag of non-gmo popping corn and one of these:

It's way more fun, too.

I agree that microwave popcorn is nasty. The article you linked to, first off, is 5 years old. Secondly, the people who are having lung issues are the plant workers, not the consumers. Thirdly, that article states how many companies have stopped using the product. That said, plant worker safety is important. The one case cited involving a consumer was someone(ONE PERSON) who ate microwave popcorn multiple times a day every day. That person is a dipshit.

I do take issue with the source. She is a click bait freak who has no authority on anything. Her headline "Why Microwave Popcorn Is An Absolute Health Nightmare" is complete and utter bullshit. No one out there says that it is a health nightmare for the consumer. She cites no studies done and links to some random site and Dr. Mercola who is a quack.

Sometimes I really hate the internet because of all the garbage out there that people latch onto without actually researching and using credible sources.

Yep, just like asbestos.

Is the NIH reputable enough for you?

Microwave popcorn butter flavoring:
We conclude that 2,3-pentanedione is a respiratory hazard that can also alter gene expression in the brain.

Genetically Modified corn:
...with the present data it cannot be concluded that GM corn MON863 is a safe product.

Personally, I consider alcohol to be poison and haven't had a drink in five years, but there is a broad selection of organic beer and wine available.
Organic, by definition, is GMO-free.

Those are just PubMed links. PubMed simply indexes papers published with any relation to life sciences or biomedical topics. The NIH helps maintain that database, but it has nothing to do with endorsement of results.

I didn't look at the flavoring links, but the GM corn link you provided is to a paper which has been widely criticized and rejected by not just most other scientists, but also by regulatory boards in the EU, Australia, and other places which are a lot more strict about GM products than the U.S. is. Its author, Gilles-Eric Séralini, is a vocal critic of GM products who has been the subject of so much controversey they've named an "affair" after him.
Read more here.

In a nutshell: no, he is not a "reputable enough" source. He is a lone voice of alarmism in a sea of unconcerned scientists.
