AJ Bombers planning Madison location

AJ Bombers planning Madison location 10/25/10
AJ Bombers, the downtown Milwaukee burger place recently featured on the Travel Channel's "Food Wars" show, is looking for a home in Madison.

Owner Joe Sorge said he's looked at a couple of sites around State St. and the Capitol, and hopes to open in early summer.

The menu would be identical to the Milwaukee restaurant's, he said, though Madison would shape some specialty burgers on the menu. The decor would be identical as well, Sorge added, although the Madison restaurant is expected to be 10% to 25% larger.

This is interesting news. I think a place of the sort could clean up in downtown/State St. At least I'd like to think that it has a much better chance of succeeding than the ill-fated State St. location of the Milwaukee institution 'Real Chili'.
The overrated Five Guys on State closes early, and sure there's always The Plaza, but that's old hat.

Now, I've never eaten at AJ Bomber's or Sobleman's for that matter. AJ Bomber's may have won the travel channel's food wars, but Sobleman's has come out on top almost unanimously vs. AJ's in readers choice and editors picks at OnMilwaukee. I can't guess which I'd prefer, only that I'm more of a no-frills burger guy, and AJ's seems to have more of a penchant for funkafying their burgers. What can I say, I was raised on Kopp's :)

I do not have enough knowledge about AJ Bombers to hate it yet. But I have a feeling that will change.

You'd think they would have learned the "hype" lesson from Krispy Kreme.

Between the name of the place and the fact that MadMind started this thread, I thought for sure this was going to be about a strip joint.

How does the "bombers" theme fit into the place?

I hope they warn people with peanut allergies to stay out.

Thanks. I'll avoid this place.

Now, if they open a place called "AJ Co-eds", I'm in.

You'd rather have peanuts co-eded on you?

Out on State Street this Saturday, we encountered AJ Bomber's "street team," a group of kids whose job it was to try and divert people up to AJB's out-of-the-way location at the corner of Henry and Gorham.

"Hey! Come check out our peanut bombs! We literally bomb your table with peanuts!"

It was like a Saturday Night Live sketch. Like peanuts? We'll shoot you in the face with some damn peanuts!
