Biggest, maybe best burger in Madison

Postby workboy7 » Sat Mar 28, 2009 9:00 am

I met some friends recently at a dive-ish bar on Commercial Ave called Eagle Crest (Town of Burke, smoking permitted) and ordered the bacon cheese burger. About $7, a bit high for your average bar menu, but I was told it was worth it. Now some local places might have burgers bigger, but those are "Dare you" sandwiches, not their average sale. Not here. This burger had more bacon on it than most places have beef, no kidding. A half pound or more of hand pattied and perfectly done (a bit of pink) with 8-10 thick bacon slices melted cheddar, chips and a pickle. Amazing.

Meanwhile, the $19 Kobe beef burger reviewed in last Sunday's WSJ is already off the menu at Zander's...just like the reefer:

After a second burger today, all hesitation in naming Madison's Best Burger is over. Eagle Crest on Commercial Ave. offers one of the worlds best ways to spend $8. For you Madisonians with quivering sphincters regarding smoking, you can call ahead. Any forons want to offer anything that I haven't tried? Any hidden gems out there?

Haven't tried the Eagle Crest yet, but I must put in a plug for my neighborhood place - The Alchemy. Two choices: Apple-rum Bacon Burger, and a Bison burger, both really tasty! And, you don't have to have it with fries, for you health-conscious ones. :D

Brothers Three maybe? More like 5 strips of bacon, but the same basic idea. I'll need to give Eagle Crest a shot to compare...

I eat at the Eagle Crest fairly regularly, and while they make a good burger, I don't think it comes even close to the "best in Madison". It's big, and good for it's size, but definitely not the best.

My research in this area is nowhere near complete, but right now my favorites are the house burger at the Old Fashioned, or the cheddar burger at the Harmony.

One question, what good does calling ahead do with regards to the smoke, are they going to shoe all the smokers out for me?

Fennel, your posts make me feel sorry for you. Like a realistic Milhouse, I think you really believe what you post might improve how others think of you. So sad, so really sad.

Save the elitist jokes but I recently had one of the best burgers I've had at the Bishops Bay country club. I was a guest not a member. The Bishop's Burger has bacon, thousand island dressing, lettuce, tomato, swiss, served on ciabatta bread for $9.25. It's fantastic.

The old Bishop's house was pretty sweet too. Those roman catholic officials sure know how to live.
