Postby Zapela » Fri Mar 28, 2008 10:38 am

The subject line says it all. Is there any place to get dim sum in Madison? I am craving it bad. Thanks!

Crappy one at Hong Kong Cafe.
Weak one at Imperial Garden West.

Bandung has a sort of kinda one:
called a "rijsttafel," the elaborate feast where rice is the backdrop for 10 meat- and vegetable-based accompaniments. The meal includes authentic music and dancing and requires advance booking. Reservations recommended, especially on weekends. 10-item rijsttafel $25.

Hong Kong Cafe on Mills and Chang Jiang supposedly do dim sum, but I've not heard good things. Maybe one day, when I'm feeling particularly masochistic, I'll try them.

For those coming from larger cities, especially the coasts, the Chinese cuisine in Madison is sadly lacking.

What is interesting is that many other types of cuisine are well represented for a city this size. This is probably due in part to the University and/or the large international student population. We have a large Chinese population among those international students, so I can't figure out why the Chinese offerings are so bad.

Yen Ching has a passable, but small one. But they have jellyfish, tan po pork, and various dumplings, so it'll do. :)
