Grocery stores, recipes, cook books, CSAs, farmers' markets, organic, local, processed, corporate. It's a smorgabord!

Indie, hippie, veggie-friendly restaurant?

Postby athabasca » Tue Dec 18, 2007 2:28 pm

Here's the challenge in full: looking for a suggestion for a Madison-area restaurant or cafe where one can get a gift-certificate; some place with an indie/hippie vibe, preferably veggie/green/eco/gay friendly.

What've we got? I obviously don't get out enough...

Mother Fool's. (Okay, pretty much every purveyor of food on Willy St. except the Wisco.)

Chautara, if you don't mind that it's right on State Street. Lao Laan Xang is excellent; I prefer the Atwood location as it's often easier to get a table.

And the ultimate answer to your challenge is Lazy Jane's which rocks in all respects-- but is open during the day only!

Himal Chuli! Himal Chuli! I don't know exactly what you mean by "hippie" but it's a small, bare bones space, with excellent vegetarian food.

And there are these hippie hangouts:

Glass Nickel (extra points for eco friendly delivery cars),
Weary Traveler

I really miss Savory Thymes. Vegetarian/vegan fare with a measure of class in a funky kind of way.

I second Himal Chuli, Buraka, Chautaura, Lao Laan Xan and Bunky's. Bandung also has a bunch of vegetarian items, possibly vegan. I've found most Madison 'original' restaurants offer a few vegetarian selections - though vegan offerings are more rare.
