How do YOU tip at a buffet?

Grocery stores, recipes, cook books, CSAs, farmers' markets, organic, local, processed, corporate. It's a smorgabord!

How do YOU tip at a buffet?

Postby auntgoodness » Thu Nov 08, 2007 2:49 pm

So I'm curious.

I frequent these cloth napkin lunch buffet type places (Swagat, Maharaja) and I'm not sure how to tip. I do realize 20% on an $8 buffet with a water ain't all that much, but sometimes feel like I'm leaving too much since all they did was fill a water glass and clear a plate.

Am I a jerk for not automatically leaving 20 percent?

Do they get paid $2.13 an hour?

What is the expected tip at these places?

What are your habits, fellow buffet-goers?

I don't go 20% either, but the service at Maharaja (the only buffet I routinely go to) is so good and attentive, that I aim for at least 15% and usually round upward.

I tip less, but still try to keep it around 15%. But then again, I only eat at places where they still bring a drink and bus the table. If I had to do both of those myself I might not tip more than a buck per person.

Yep, same here. Even my takeout orders. Ya know, they make fresh bread for us!

No kidding about the Maharaja service. It's always sunny and prompt.
