Another new restarurant on State?

Postby bassbari » Tue Oct 30, 2007 9:04 pm

I went for coffee at Esspresso Saturday and noticed a new place next to Jack's Shoes. They looked like they were getting ready to open, but no sign yet. Looked similar to Harvest in layout. Anyone know the skinny?
Also, I saw that the chocolate place next to Opheum bit the dust already. Too bad. I hate to see failure of independents.

The candy store next to the orpheum went out of business because the family decided to move away. I don't think they were necessarily having financial trouble.

As for the restaurant in question, The Icon, it seems to have opened on monday or tuesday. I saw people dining there last night. They posted the menu on their windows last saturday. Me and my GF had been wondering what the menu was, so I took a blurry, useless picture of it in a fit of excitement.

Thanks for the info. The tapas menu looks good. I will check it out after the opera next week.

I wandered by after the blues show at the Overture last night. Someone connected with the place was standing outside. He said they'd open next week - probably Wednesday.

"The Icon, a Spanish restaurant that is the brainchild of Mohamed Barketallah, owner of Frida Mexican Grill across the street."

I don't want to be friends with any of his brainchildren.

Dumb question - what was in the space where the Icon is now?

"Spanish" tapas which - according to the menu in the window - include fish fry, fried calamari and curry chicken salad.

If they surrounded these 'tapas' with true Spanish tapas I could forgive them; but the menu is a typical tourist/college-student pandering State St menu.

So sad when Madison could really use a real Spanish tapas restaurant.

The last time it was occupied it was Tammy Baldwin's campaign headquarters. Not sure before that.

"Spanish" tapas

Fried calamari is actually very prevalent in Spain. However, I agree with you regarding the other "tapas"

I like your post because you didn't use the word "tapas" (as far as I could tell).

JOEBIALEK has evolved! It can respond in an almost substantive way! We are witnessing Darwinian science at its best.
