Emphasis on "old" here, I think. Since 2000, new management has taken over Lombardino's and it's superb. As local Italian goes, Osteria Papavero is also excellent.

Curry N' A Hurry.
Ovens of Brittany -- best morning buns ever!
Miller's Market
Magnus (will be sorely missed)

And that cafe above what is now American Apparel; I can't for the life of me remember the name.

Thanks! God, I loved that place.

JA's Soul Food is now also gone. Went over for lunch last week and they were emptying the place out. Spoke to Larry Jackson, the lovely owner. The front area is being rented out, but they'll keep the kitchen and in the future may try to just have takeout around back. They made some of the best fried catfish I ever tasted! Sad.

Edited because I made an inaccurate observation about a place that isn't really closed. It's the space next to it (to right of Mr. Roberts) that is.

I worked at the Fess in the mid 80s and we referred to ourselves as Fessticles. Before that I was at the old Lombardino's for years - there we dressed the statues and put cartoon captions on the paintings. Many fond memories of the Maglio family.

Golden City Chinese restaurant on University in Shorewood, which is now Noodles was some of the best in town. The family quit while the business was still going well and sold the property. I wonder whatever happen to them.

I stopped by the resurrected Brat und Brau in Mazomanie for dinner on Friday. I had good memories of the place from when I was a teenager (never really experiencing the "brau" offerings) and when my friends and I were discussing dinner option on the way to APT I remembered reading that this place had opened. The brat was really excellent and the cottage fries were as good as advertized. We also got cheese curds but these were underwhelming, probably due to not enough time in the fryer. Beer options included Lake Louie and New Glarus bottles plus a few German offerings. All in all I'm happy they're back and wish them success.

Orpheum Lobby Restaurant.

I hope-hope-hope it's not gone for good. What a shitshow.

I'd glad we had all those Saturday breakfasts when we could, and wish I'd had more lunches there. If it's gone forever it'll be as sad a loss as Taqueria Gila Monster for me, maybe sadder.

Two rib joints I miss: Big Moma's and Uncle Fat's, and Porky Pine Pete's. I haven't found any place comparable in Madison since they closed.

When I was in high school and driving down to Madison from out of town, my friends and I liked to have pizza at Barnaby's. After that we'd go across the street to Backstage at East Towne and swill Oscars, then go see a movie. I'm thinking I'd probably turn up my nose now, but it was fun then....
