That's Sooooo Madison Photo contest???

Postby stormin » Tue Dec 22, 2009 9:54 am

Call it sour grapes on my part if you must but I think I have some legit concerns here. I sent Ellen an e-mail a while back after stewing for a while. No response to the e-mail which means I don't matter. So I decided to join this thing so I could post it here. Now I am not able to include the pic as I was able to with my e-mail but please, take my word for it -- I coulda been a contender...Or maybe I can insert the image so I will try...
Here goes the e-mail first...
Hi there Ellen,
I really just have to ask -- I know it is typical that everyone who enters one of these contests thinks their pic is a winner, however, I have to wonder if my entry got missed? As you can see from the original e-mail below there were difficulties. After talking to some folks and then later to you there were indeed some technical difficulties which you said were now fixed. You also verified that you had received my entry. So if that was the case, I am extremely curious as to how it never made the cut for the power point presentation much less not winning one of the prizes? That aside, even if I didn't have an entry -- how does a dude with his kid on a Marble floor (that some of us may know as the Capital floor) fit into "That's Soooo Madison"?
Please enlighten me.
Thank you, I eagerly await your reply.

Pic doesn't seem to work or I haven't figured it out yet...it is an attack vector???

Why do you need protecting? Clearly, the whole world is already out to get you; putting your name on this post couldn't make anything worse, could it?

And let's see...Flickr. Picvault. Photobucket. Tweetpic. Imageshack. All image-hosting sites that would be happy to provide bandwidth for this apparently impressive piece of photography.

But can I clarify something? You were able to enter the competition, right? You met the qualifications for entry? And your big complaint is that you didn't win?

This does not seem like a "legit concern." It seems like bellyaching.

Bellyaching or not my interest is peaked. Throw it up on a site and post us a link. I wanna see this beast. Also I think there was some question as to whether or not the pic made it into the competition.

Go ahead and email your photo to me at joyce@isthmus.com and I'll post it here. Send it from the same email you used to register for the Forum so I can verify it's really you.

Hi there Ellen,
I have to wonder if my kid's application got missed?
There is no way he wasn't accepted into your school. I've met some of the kids that go there and they're idiots compared to my kid. My kid is the most super special kid in the world and there's no way that he's been rejected. I am extremely curious as to how he hasn't received a full scholarship.
Thank you, I eagerly await your reply.

Here is a link to the pic.

As I mentioned (for the first guy who replied), there is of course some sour grapes involved here, sure. But there is more to it then that Keep in mind the context of the contest:
The great icon of Madison photography is, without a doubt, the State Capitol. Its dome, which has doubled for the nation's Capitol in major motion pictures, dominates both the skyline and the imaginations of the city's image-makers. It says "Madison" the way nothing else really does. But how do you take a fresh look at the Capitol? The city as a whole, the UW-Madison, the people and the events of the Mad City? That's the question we were asking with our photo contest "That's Soooo Madison." By and large, you delivered, balancing quirky scenes with the finer elements of photo composition. Here's what you found, and what we liked, set to song
So with that said and not to take anything away from the winner for the nice pic that it was -- what has that got to do with madison -- could have been the capital of Nebraska for all I know.

Just how desperate for child/goat porn are you?

Although I fail to see what's 'sooooo Madison' about child/goat porn - that seems more like a Scranton thing to me.

There is no accounting for someone else's taste, especially when it comes to art.

Even if the photo in question is the greatest photo ever, it doesn't matter when it comes to a juror/jury.

I have entered numerous competitions and I am ALWAYS surprised by what "wins" the contest (even if it is me).

I have seen after-contest shows where the juror, when seeing the show, will indicate that they don't remember many of the winners THEY selected (sometimes only a few weeks after the selections were made).

I have seen jurors give lectures about a contest where they freely admit they ignored the guidelines supplied by the people running the contest, or they admit that if they picked the show/winners again, they would probably pick a totally different set of images.

And, I have seen shows where there WERE clerical/accounting errors by those running the competition that resulted in awkward phone calls and emails.

All of that said, I'll agree with the original poster that the winning image is a bit suspect (as were some of the others in the slideshow). But who am I to judge?

If you reread the context of the contest that you yourself posted, you'll see that the whole point of the contest was that photos of the dome are ubiquitous, boring and cliche.
So your entry was a nice picture of the dome from State St...?
It's a fine pic, but a little boring and cliche.
Sorry.
