Yes. if it's so easy to start a thread in the forum, why have a comment section attached to stories?

Because. What does it matter? People use both.

If the goal is to achieve decorum then I'd rather them do the latter. Posting with a "real" name doesn't have much to do with the quality of comments on the internet as far as I can tell. Was there some research into this before the decision was made that the best way to have good and proper internet comments is to force people to enter their "real" name?

As moderator of this Forum for ten years and a close reader of newspaper websites, I'd have to say you're wrong there. Getting people to sign their real name to what they write absolutely and directly affects the quality of their contributions.

Think of it this way: Comments are like letters to the editor, for which we require names and even phone numbers before running. Why would we hold online contributors to a lower standard? Of the thousands of comments I've read on TDP, I can think of only a handful that were posted with real names that were objectionable and needed to go. Of those that are purposely anonymous, a high percentage are garbage.

The person writing the story is doing so under his/her real name. The commenter should do likewise.

So if this person ever writes for Isthmus under this name again (was I too late to the party to get the joke?), y'all can go apeshit with the anonymity.

Does Isthmus still run the "Capitol Eye" column?

So if I posted an article comment as Henry Vilas, would it get deleted? After all, HV is a real name, just not mine.

Rhetorical question, as I know the answer. Over the year I've had a couple or three letters to the editor published in the paper and ink version, all in my own name.

But, is there any verification that the name I use is actually my real name?

No. But if you're found out to have lied about it Joycie comes to your house with a sack full of doorknobs and beats you death. Or so I'm told.

That's what I thought. It's gonna be a bad scene when he shows up at Fred Mohs' door with that bag.
