MadMind got banned? Did I miss something even more MadMind-y than usual? Because that seems over the top to me.

I don't remember if you were part of the epic battles about the Anti-Gay Amendment there. There was one openly gay poster there - Grumpus. And after the amendment passed he said he was moving out of Wisconsin. I pleaded with him not to, but he said he and his partner wouldn't be able to continue health coverage. I guess he did leave, he stopped posting there too.

There are conservatives there that actually believe all the garbage that Julianne Appling and her crusaders were spewing. Those people remain, a lot of right-wing nuts are there (as well as some lefties), but I guess that's the way Tim Kelley wants it.

My above comment was tongue in cheek and was actually tossed out for you. I never really established my moniker on madison.com because I didn't have the patience that is needed to wage war over there, but kudos to you for easily figuring out my madison.com cyber nom de plume.

I thought it was cute. Of course knowing Spanish made it easier - my limited Spanish, that is. Even though I took it for 4 years, I never learned to speak it very well.

Waging war over there is like banging your head against a wall, so I don't blame you for not participating. It did help me formulate my opinions for discussions in the real world though. I did phone calling for the fight against the amendment. My daughter and husband went door to door, so they were more brave than I was. But they didn't run into anyone really nasty. One or two people did slam their doors on them.

Well, I'd rather have you here than him, but that doesn't seem so egregious to me (said as someone who's been on the wrong side of the C word more than once on this board).

Thank you. I didn't want to see him banned. After he was banned I posted that I found his misogynistic comments more offensive and that as a gay man I can take his insults. Jason made it clear that my opinion was not a factor in his banning because MadMind's insults were offensive to the larger community even though they were directed to me. I understand that. A big portion of this thread relates to me making a similar insult to Peanutbutter, for which I've apologized. I guess the larger message is that we really need to work harder to be respectful towards each other, even if that is a gay man calling another man a c**ks***ker or a a black person calling another the n-word.

It's kind of funny at the same time there is the larger debate going on with Professor Gates, Sgt Crowley and President Obama. It's a teachable moment about using respectful language towards each other.

Is it bad that my immediate reaction to the above is "Fuck that!"?

I suppose it's true, though. I may picture TDPF as a free-for-all where no language is too profane, no insult beyond the pale. But not everybody comes here with that attitude, and it's not right to exclude them. However pussy they may be. (Kidding. I really do think a baseline respect level is a good idea.)

Perhaps we have become too pussified without the presence of The Chuck. Hell, even Ned has become an anemic shadow of his former presence on this forum.

See, this is the problem with rules.

It's never been about language. The F-word is in wide use here, always has been and nobody has ever been banned for it.

Homophobia and racism isn't about language. And it's possible to be extremely offensive without swearing at all. Mostly, people are banned here when they step over the line of being respectful to others.

It's like the Supreme Court and pornography; I know it when I see it.

But the C word was just an easy example. Better/worse: Matt Logan Hopper suggesting I check the local media to see if there was a Critical Mass ride before rushing my terminal mom to UW hospital. And even Logie was OK in my book.

Eh, it's a different way, and not my call.

Agreed.

There also has to be an element of contribution versus offense. i.e., Chuck broke every rule there was but was entertaining in a Lenny Bruce sort of way. blunt constantly dogged your tail, but was never banned because he contributed. Ned can be downright offensive at times but provides discussion. And considering some of the stuff I've posted but didn't get banned for, I'm assuming I must provide some entertainment value.

So basically it is arbitrary and at your whim?

Is everyone better now?

Sometimes this forum reminds me too much of my family. Nothing like listening to family members getting all bent out of shape when if they listened to each other they would realize that they are on the same side of the battle.

Talk about friendly fire....

Could we please ban the spam?!
