Spambot question.

Postby white_rabbit » Wed Apr 29, 2009 9:47 am

On a different forum I'm on I wasn't able to post links until I had accumulated 20 posts. How come the DPF doesn't have a similar rule to eliminate most of these drive-by spambots posting links?

These aren't spambots nowadays; at least not the older models. On the registration page there is a question that needs answered by a human above and beyond the hacked-long-ago captcha image supplied by phpbb. So these be real people who have nothing better to do than to spam message boards. Pathetic, actually.
The 'points to post links' and other ways around the spam problem are modifications to the phpbb code which is not a task to be undertaken lightly if a board wants to be able to do security upgrades fairly easily. The more mods, the more potential for problems.

So you're saying this is some kind of Human/Spambot hybrid? Does it look anything like this:

If so I don't think TDPF stands a chance. Foronity is doomed.
