Avoiding the swivel isn't about being shy or intimidated (for me) I just like to quietly blend in before I start talking loud and annoying people.

I love the nostalgia in this thread! Always interesting to hear about the ghosts of old bars that inhabit the present.

No love for Jocko's Rocketship? Or have your lawyers advised you not to mention it? That was the place I'd go with a group of friends for ONE can of PBR at the max, as a stopover between the previous and next bars of the evening. (This was before PBR was ironic-cool, mind you.)

It did not matter what time of day or night it was, they always seemed to have strongman competitions on the TV.

Flamingo<-Grotto
Madison Avenue<-Club Amazon<-Bullwinkle's<-Headliners (I think?)
???<-R&R station
The Dangle!
Ram Head<Bullfeathers

I'd like to see a big flowchart of the bars that were and their transitions into the bars that are. It would be like the pedigrees of great (and not-so-great) racehorses.

You use arrows opposite of me, but is this right?

R&R Station -> Paramount -> R&R Station -> campus church -> razed for current towering campus building

Incidentally, there are still some entries online for the R&R Station:

Wasn't it also called Snoopy's at one time?

Was this the Mango that was in University Square?

4 memories
1. being introduced to Flip Night (flip a quarter for 1/2 price pitchers of anything).
2. one of the bartenders was super hot.
3. I think I saw Natty Nation play here. Sweaty & Awesome
4. one of the Bartenders was on MTVs Road Rules (Noah i believe).

I preferred Foghat Fridays.

Or as Mr. Loaf sang:
"I'm praying for the end of time
It's all that I can do
Praying for the end of time, so I can end my time with you."

We used to call it the Stone Bone. I met my husband there during its R&R days when our respective bands played a WISPIRG benefit. A couple years later we played a string of New Band Nights at the Paramount. I have oddly fond memories of those gigs, though we couldn't possibly have been more out of place, and getting up for work the next day always sucked.

I was only at Jocko's a few times. Ditto the Black Bear, where I watched a woman stagger into the bathroom totally bloody and pissed off after a chickfight at the bar.

No no, it was all-you-can-eat meatloaf and mashed potatoes on Monday.

The mashed potatoes are one of the first things I think of when someone mentions the old Mango Grill. They were practically a meal by themselves.

That and seeing Reason For Leaving play there. When I finally got a date for my band they closed up shortly after and never did get a chance to play there.

Whatever happened to Kathy, the former owner of the Mango Grill? Always enjoyed talking with her when I stopped in for lunch.
